Assesses, intervenes, and reassesses the patient's self-report/symptoms of pain promptly and takes appropriate action according to standard operating procedure. Identifies the early warning signs of a change in a patient's condition and responds appropriately to a deteriorating patient, including contacting responsible clinicians as indicated by standard operating procedure. Assists with or institutes emergency measures for sudden adverse developments in patient conditions. Reports pertinent observations and reactions regarding patients to the appropriate multidisciplinary team member and records those observations accurately and concisely. Ensures that intervention or referrals are made promptly. Completes and submits all incident reports (patient, visitor, staff) prior to the completion of each shift. Establishes and maintains communication and utilizes educational opportunities with patients and other significant individuals. As early as possible, begins discharge planning, appropriate education and counseling based on identified needs to optimize patient/family understanding. Evaluates and documents according to standard operating procedure. Assigns or delegates, within the scope of practice, education and experience, the responsibility for performance of nursing interventions to other persons for which that person has the necessary skills and competence to accomplish safely. Student Nurse Extern Cardiovascular Recovery Unit

About this Job: (RN) Nursing students slated to graduate in 2027 are encouraged to apply now for our Winter Student Nurse Extern Program This dayshift position will be based on our 28-bed Cardiovascular Recovery Unit, plus Radial Discharge Lounge, at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital. Externs will have the opportunity to learn how to prepare and recover patients undergoing cardiac and vascular interventions. Patient-centered care and cardiovascular education are the focus on this unit and can provide a solid steppingstone into a cardiac focused specialty post-graduation. Gain valuable hands-on experience while working alongside an experienced RN mentor and interdisciplinary care team. For at least 50% of your clinical time, you will receive one-on-one mentorship, coaching, and support to help build your clinical skills, critical thinking, and confidence as a future nurse. You will also be supported by a Nursing Professional Development Specialist and participate in bi-weekly educational sessions designed to enhance your learning experience. Program Expectations: During the Winter Cohort, externs will work full-time hours, consisting of 12-hour shifts, for approximately five weeks.
