No general anesthetics are utilized and no surgical procedures are performed in Same Day Surgery. Each child receives a physical assessment, including vital signs, and pre-operative teaching is completed. Before being transported to the operating room, all patients and families visit with an anesthesia provider and surgical staff to ensure all questions have been answered. Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) (Phase I Recovery):The Children’s Mercy Post-Anesthesia Care Unit is for patients who have had surgical procedures, usually under general anesthesia. The PACU Nursing Staff monitors vital signs, respiratory status, level of consciousness, pain, nausea/vomiting, and surgical site post-operatively. We work closely with Anesthesia and the Surgeon for pain and comfort management. We aim to resolve all patient care needs during every phase of post-anesthesia care. Once a patient has met standard criterion, they transfer to Phase II and are dismissed the same day or transfer to an inpatient unit for further observation. Phase II Dismissal (Post-Op): The Children’s Mercy Phase II Dismissal area is for patients who have met established criteria and are able to be dismissed home following their surgical procedure. Parents are provided written and verbal instructions on the care of their child and post-operative teaching is completed. PACU-critical care staff nurses provide specialized patient care in the surgical setting in accordance with applicable scope and standards of practice with the policies, values, and mission of the organization. PACU-critical care staff nurses utilize the nursing process and knowledge of scientific principles to provide safe, high quality, comprehensive, and age-appropriate nursing care for patients undergoing Level 0 to 6 surgical procedures in the hospital setting, including managing emergent, complex clinical situations appropriately. The PACU-critical care staff nurse prepares, monitors, and manages the patient and perianesthesia setting during the surgical encounter to maintain a safe environment, optimize outcomes, and maximize available resources. The Clinical Nurse Manager assumes first line leadership responsibility and accountability for managing the delivery of patient care on an assigned unit. Job Description Utilizes the nursing process for assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation to provide safe, therapeutic care. Functions as a member of the interdisciplinary and nursing teams; carries out established nursing procedures and performs related duties as required; performs nursing care for patients with more complex needs with assistance and supervision. Department Description The Intensive Care Nursery (ICN), founded in 1964, is a regional tertiary center and has the proud distinction of being one of the first neonatal intensive care units in the world. In addition to caring for extremely premature infants, the ICN also cares for infants with congenital anomalies in need of evaluation and surgical interventions. The ICN opened the first Neuro Intensive care unit for newborns in 2008. Today, the ICN continues to enjoy a reputation for being at the forefront of innovation in the fields of neonatology and fetal treatment. Neonatologists, neurologists, radiologists and nurses work to improve neuro developmental outcomes in very premature infants and full-term babies who are at high risk of neurological injury or have clinical evidence of encephalopathy, seizures or stroke. The ICN provides state of the art care for infants with neurological, gastrointestinal, renal and skeletal, cardiac and respiratory diseases. We are one of a few centers in Northern California that provides ECMO and are recognized as an ECMO Center of Excellence. Staff nurses are the backbone of the ICN. They provide comprehensive, compassionate and highly specialized care to the most fragile of infants and their families. In addition to providing direct patient care, staff nurses participate on unit-level committees, ensuring that each staff member has an active voice in the operation and function of the unit. Responsibilities Responsible for maintaining the knowledge and abilities essential to the performance of stated behaviors. Carries out legal responsibilities within the scope of the Nurse Practice Act. Accountable to the NURSE SVC SUPV 2 for overall work performance. Qualifications Required Qualifications: Minimum two (2) years of recent clinical RN experience in a level III Intensive Care Nursery with a surgical patient population Proficiency in providing care for the extreme low birth weight infants and neonates with congenital anomalies such as Pre-Operative Congenital Heart Disease This position requires flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.
