Description The Clinical Nurse is a Registered Professional Nurse who provides safe, competent quality care based on nursing theory and research to a designated group of patients and significant others. Responsibilities Patient Care 1. Delivers patient care by incorporating the tenets of the professional practice model of Relationship Centered Care and through the application of the nursing process based upon theory, research, evidence-based practice, and approved organizational nursing standards. 2. The program is integrated with AORN’s Periop 101 program which features online courses, instructor-led classes and a skills lab. Patients commonly treated include those with sepsis and septic shock, hypertensive emergencies requiring IV therapy, acute respiratory failure (invasive and non‑invasive ventilation), ARDS , and patients requiring prone therapy . The unit also manages status epilepticus, hypotension, gastrointestinal bleeding (including use of rapid infusers and massive transfusion protocols), DIC , intentional and unintentional overdoses , cardiac arrest patients (with or without targeted temperature management), and acute or chronic renal failure requiring HD, PD, or CRRT . Post‑operative patients needing enhanced monitoring are also frequently admitted. Nurses care for patients with a wide range of invasive monitoring and access , including PA catheters, central venous catheters, arterial lines, PICC lines, bladder pressure monitoring , and are responsible for the titration of vasoactive medications . Staffing Model Nurse‑to‑patient ratios are acuity‑based , typically 1:3 or 1:2 , with the ability to flex to 1:1 or 2:1 when clinically indicated.
