Emergency Department Charge Registered Nurse (RN ) - Emergency Department, Part Time

Overview The ED Lead/Triage Nurse is a vital leadership and clinical role responsible for overseeing shift operations in the Emergency Department, ensuring efficient patient flow, safe care delivery, and effective team coordination. This role also involves assessing and prioritizing patients upon arrival through systematic triage, initiating appropriate care pathways, and facilitating communication between healthcare teams. Responsibilities Lead Nurse Responsibilities: Leadership & Oversight Serve as the clinical leader and primary resource for nursing staff during assigned shifts. Coordinate staffing assignments based on patient acuity and unit needs. Manage shift operations, including delegation of tasks and monitoring workflows. Support staff in escalating clinical concerns to providers or leadership as needed. Patient Flow & Throughput Oversee the movement of patients through the ED, from arrival to disposition (admission, transfer, or discharge). Collaborate with bed management, inpatient units, and ancillary departments to optimize patient flow. Address and mitigate bottlenecks or delays in real-time. Resource Management Ensure appropriate availability of supplies, equipment, and staffing resources. Initiate and lead code responses, disaster preparedness actions, and emergency protocols. Communication & Team Support Act as a liaison between ED staff, physicians, other departments, and hospital leadership. Facilitate shift handoff and ensure continuity of care through effective communication. Provide coaching, mentorship, and conflict resolution as needed. Provide coverage for breaks to ensure downtime for our staff. Triage Nurse Responsibilities: Initial Patient Assessment Perform comprehensive triage assessments using standardized triage protocols (e.g., ESI—Emergency Severity Index). Determine the priority level for care based on patient acuity and resource needs. Clinical Decision-Making Identify high-risk patients and initiate life-saving interventions per standing orders or protocols. Communicate critical findings promptly to the care team. Documentation & Data Entry Accurately document triage assessments, vital signs, chief complaints, and other pertinent clinical information in the EHR. Patient Experience & Safety Provide clear instructions and explanations to patients and families regarding wait times, processes, and care expectations. Ensure infection control and safety measures are adhered to in the waiting area and triage spaces. Qualifications Education: Graduate of an accredited Nursing Program (ADN or BSN preferred). Licensure: Current Registered Nurse (RN) license. Certifications: BLS and ACLS upon hire. PALS and AVADE within 6 months of hire. TNCC and NRP within 1 year of hire. ENPC is supported by leadership and optional. Experience: Minimum of 2–3 years Emergency Department nursing experience. Prior leadership or triage experience preferred. Skills: Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills. Excellent communication, leadership, and team coordination abilities. Proficiency in electronic medical records (EMR/EHR). Overview Our Level 1 Emergency Department is expanding to meet the needs of our rural New England region’s acutely ill patients requiring technical specialized procedures available only at our facility. The DH Emergency Department is slated to open a new 4 bed landing zone in November 2024. We are recruiting nurses with Critical Care, step down or Emergency nursing experience to join our team for this exciting new unit as we expand our ability to care for the patients in our region. As an RN on this unit, you will be caring for critical patients in urgent need for specific procedures such as; cardiac catheterization, invasive neurological procedures, external ventricular drains, intercranial pressure monitoring or patients awaiting a surgical procedure pending OR suite availability. The successful candidate should possess ACLS & PALS certifications or have the dedication to obtain within 6 months of hire and be interested in working with a dynamic team dedicated to providing specialized patient care. The unit requires flexibility and high level of engagement to thrive. The ED nursing leadership team will provide orientation and training to allow the landing zone nurses to cross train to the emergency department and/or job shares with other DH nursing units. This is a FT, 36hrs/week, 3x12hr rotating shifts that are 7a-7p and 7p-7a. Rotating includes weekdays, weekends, overnight weeknights, overnight weekends, and holidays. Responsibilities The Clinical Nurse is an engaged and credentialed member of the Professional Nursing Organization and is responsible for autonomous practice directed by the professional tenets of practitioner, leader/decision maker, scientist and transferor. The Clinical Nurse is responsible for utilizing the nursing process to provide evidence-based care and to continuously monitor and evaluate practice to ensure safe passage of patients that is in the best interest of populations served. Practitioner Utilizes the nursing process to assess, diagnose, identify outcomes, plan, implement and evaluate an individualized plan of care. Utilizes critical thinking and the nursing process to anticipate and recognize changes in patient status, taking action to modify the plan of care or to elevate to the care team as necessary. Practices in accordance with the ANA Code of Ethics to advocate for patients, uphold their autonomy in decision-making, ensure informed consent and assist patients in families in expressing self-determination. Qualifications Graduate from an accredited Nursing Program required. Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing (BSN) preferred. Required Licensure/Certifications Licensed RN with NH eligibility BLS
