The Registered Nurse (RN) will provide comprehensive treatment to those affected by substance use, mental health, and other behavioral health disorders. Responsibilities Work under the supervision of the Nurse Manager, Service Director and/or Program Director and follows medical orders for patient care. Communicate with supervisor, medical provider and/or Medical Director regarding patients' medical concerns. Monitor patients' medical status, signs and symptoms of withdrawal and reports to supervisor and/or medical director. Work with other medical staff across the agency and in the community for continuity of patient medical care. Communicate with clinical staff regarding patients' medical concerns. Work directly with patients' in providing medical services, interpreting medical information and provide recommendations or make referrals for medical services. Develop, recommend, and review medical policies and procedures for all programs within Syracuse Behavioral Healthcare. Advise the agency and ensure the provision of services for medical and health related issues. Provide direct patient care of medical examination, implementation of medical orders, treatment of medical conditions and communicable and infectious disease reporting in accordance with the law. Execute and review public health education and screening protocols with regards to tuberculosis, sexually transmitted diseases, hepatitis, and HIV prevention and harm reduction in accordance with Article 27-F of the Public Health law and under the Mental Hygiene law in coordination with the Medical Director/Nurse Manager. Implement and carry out a medically based group for patients on the above topics. Serves on special review and quality assurance committees as assigned. Provide and document medical consultation, assessment, examination, and treatment planning and review consistent with agency policy and requirements. Other related assignments and duties consistent with training and experience. Qualifications Must be a licensed Registered Nurse currently registered by the New York State Department. At least one year of experience, or comparable training in the treatment of substance abuse and/or substance dependency. Basic computer skills required. Medication Administration - Performs safe administration and complete documentation of medications, IV fluids, and blood products in accordance with nursing policy. - Follows medication administration policy using e-Mar, bar coding and scanning of medications and has at least an 85% scan rate. - Insertion of IV’s under aseptic technique and follows IV policy by changing site, tubing and dressing and documents accordingly. - Always follows hospital policy when administering blood products. - Maintains security of electronic signature with Omnicell and accounts for all narcotics removed from automated dispensing system through proper waste/return administration documentation. Patient and Family Education - Assesses and addresses educational needs of patients and families to include disease state, care and treatment. - Documents educational needs. - Distributes appropriate teaching sheets. - Includes evaluation of learner’s understanding post-teaching. Safe Discharge/Discharge Planning - Contributes to or initiates discharge plan upon day of admission and participates in interdisciplinary planning. - Completes all pre-discharge checklist items. - Always gives patient correct forms and discharge instructions by using 2 patient identifiers. - Provides patient a safe discharge and appropriate follow-up information and community resources are in place. Assist Providers - Assist providers in performing procedures and treatments per unit, department specific and hospital policy. - Assist physicians/providers with beside procedures and remains competent with unit-specific procedures. - Performs read back of critical values and telephone orders when interacting with physicians as warranted. - Uses SBAR when giving physicians report on change in patient condition. Equipment Use - Demonstrates knowledge and ability to use equipment safely and effectively. - Utilizes hospital equipment per policy (i.e., guardrails for IV pumps, alarm settings). - Uses patient lift equipment per policy at all times.
