A staff nurse is a registered professional nurse (RN) who manages patient centered care that is outcome directed. Patient centered care principles and professional nursing practice standards provide the foundation for the nurse to assess, plan, implement and evaluate the care provided. Documents or ensures documentation of all of patient care from admission to discharge according to hospital policies. Incorporates discharge planning into clinical pathway or plan of care to provide patients with smooth transition from hospital to home. Provides cost-effective care by appropriate utilization of time, supplies and personnel. Evaluates patient care interventions and collaborates with all team members to make changes as necessary. Initiates and/or participates in patient care conferences. Assumes the responsibility to interact on a consistent basis with the patient and family providing coordination of the plan of care for those patients whose needs do not require the expertise of a Case Manager. Promotes, has knowledge of and utilizes appropriate patient care protocol relating to the physical, psychosocial and developmental needs of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.
