Patients commonly treated include those with sepsis and septic shock, hypertensive emergencies requiring IV therapy, acute respiratory failure (invasive and non‑invasive ventilation), ARDS , and patients requiring prone therapy . The unit also manages status epilepticus, hypotension, gastrointestinal bleeding (including use of rapid infusers and massive transfusion protocols), DIC , intentional and unintentional overdoses , cardiac arrest patients (with or without targeted temperature management), and acute or chronic renal failure requiring HD, PD, or CRRT . Post‑operative patients needing enhanced monitoring are also frequently admitted. Nurses care for patients with a wide range of invasive monitoring and access , including PA catheters, central venous catheters, arterial lines, PICC lines, bladder pressure monitoring , and are responsible for the titration of vasoactive medications . Staffing Model Nurse‑to‑patient ratios are acuity‑based , typically 1:3 or 1:2 , with the ability to flex to 1:1 or 2:1 when clinically indicated. All admissions to the IMC require approval by the Intensivist or designated Advanced Practice Clinician (APC) . Skills Physical and cognitive requirements: Position’s physical requirements necessitate a full range of body motion including but not limited to, physically assisting patients, requiring stretching, bending, lifting, sitting, kneeling, stooping, standing, walking, pushing and pulling.
