Description The Medical Office Specialist offers clinical and medical office support to physicians and surgeons. Assists in patient care and administrative duties necessary to deliver quality patient care. Performs various duties as a member of the health team in the treatment and care of patient and their families and also assists with tasks to support the unit. Participates and supports the health team in the direct patient care under the supervision of an RN/LPN or MD. Responsibilities Monitors patient flow in waiting room and resolves patient flow issues related to registration and post-visit processing Provides set-up of examination room and instruments in accordance with proper techniques established by hospital and infection control policies. Takes and monitors vital signs, including fetal heart rate if necessary Performs phlebotomy, point of care testing, and other procedures as indicated by physician order, including but not limited to electrocardiogram and phototherapy Assists with procedures as necessary including but not limited to echocardiogram, sigmoidoscopy, proctoscopy, nasal scope, colposcopy, biopsy, LEEP, laser and cystoscopy Sets up oxygen and suction Performs vision screening Inventories, orders or re-stocks medical supplies; monitors expiration dates on all medications and medical supplies disposing appropriately as per institution policy Maintains logging system as required for refrigeration of medications, point of care testing, sterilization process, or others as needed Performs routine maintenance/cleaning of equipment and instruments; Notifies appropriate personnel regarding any malfunction in equipment Maintains a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures; complies with legal regulations Complies with established personal protective equipment requirements necessary for protection against exposure to blood and other potentially infections body fluids, chemical disinfectants, radiation and other hazardous substances Acts rapidly and calmly during emergencies, initiates CPR and provides the necessary items called for by the team Transports patients and equipment as needed Performs any and all duties involving direct patient care as assigned by the RN/LPN within the framework of the New York State Nurse Practice Act and MSHS Policy and Procedures Documents in medical record / electronic medical record as required by hospital policy Greets and registers patients, prepares and processes appropriate forms, directs patients to appropriate areas and arranges transportation needs Screens incoming calls, takes and responds to messages, as well as responds to inquiries regarding department procedures, services and programs. Schedules appointments and completes pre-registration via telephone including insurance verification and full patient demographics collection over the telephone or in person using computerized system(s) with accountability for the integrity of the data, including all patient demographics and insurance information Fulfills clerical responsibilities as assigned using the electronic medical record (EMR) system or manually as necessary, to include sending and receiving patient medical records; obtaining lab/x-ray reports, discharge summaries, referral information, etc. Performs routine cash collections at time of service. Completes forms and requisitions as needed, managing charts to ensure information is completed and filed appropriately. Assists in the creation and maintenance of medical charts. Retrieves lab, pathology and diagnostic testing, and operative reports and data from computer systems Checks, verifies and updates insurance information utilizing internal or electronic sources. Obtains and documents managed care referrals, required pre-certifications and authorizations as necessary Supports surgical or procedure scheduling in conjunction with Surgical Coordinator or other similar role(s) verifying times with patients, preparing charts, pre-admissions and consent forms Maintains a working knowledge of New York State third party payer eligibility requirements for private and hospital billing Utilizes and understands basic medical terminology; able to complete visit encounter forms and enters ICD10-CM and CPT information into computerized systems as appropriate Assists in training, orientation and education of entry level and or/float staff Qualifications High School Diploma/GED. Medical Assistant Certification from an approved school required. The Medicine Pulmonary service cares for several pulmonary population subsets including patients that are waiting for or have received a pulmonary transplant, adult patients with cystic fibrosis, post-operative interventional pulmonary patients, and serves as the primary inpatient service for adult patients requiring chronic invasive and non-invasive ventilation who are admitted for a variety of medical issues. The Medicine Pulmonary team is well established within the institution and is comprised of advanced practice providers that deliver high-quality and evidence-based care under the supervision of a pulmonary critical care attending. Responsibilities* Duties Will Include But Are Not Limited To Perform initial assessments of ventilator/moderate care patients and general care patients. Perform detailed history and physical, formulate initial assessment and plan, and present patient cases and any pertinent data to medical staff. Provide continuing care and discharge management of patients on the service. Appropriately order, collect, and interpret reports from diagnostic lab testing, radiographic procedures, and other clinical studies. Prescribe medications and enter other orders related to patient care. Perform various diagnostic, therapeutic, and procedural clinical interventions, based on privileges such as management of chest tube removals, tracheostomy removal/change. Manage mechanical ventilation, non-invasive ventilation, heated hi-flow nasal canula for chronic and acute on chronic respiratory failure within unit guidelines Manage antibiotics and antifungals Manage hemodynamically stable gastrointestinal bleeding and liver failure patients Manage renal failure patients requiring dialysis Manage immunosuppression and opportunistic infections in transplant patients. Manage chest tubes, including decision to place, administering thrombolytics, placement on suction or water seal or clamp, decision to remove chest tube. Run ACLS codes for cardiac arrest Initiate transplant evaluations for end stage lung and end stage liver patients Assist attending physicians in orientation of new medical trainees to the service, such as resident physicians or medical students; assist in the training of new advanced practice providers to the service; assist in maintaining continuity of care throughout the hospital stay. Other duties as required Overview Kelemen 8 is a medical-surgical unit that cares for patients with a wide variety of diagnoses, illnesses and disease processes. North and South 8 have telemetry capabilities for our patients. Kelemen 8 has frequent admissions and discharges. Kelemen 8 can accept a total of 77 patients. The North side houses 37 patients, and the South side houses 36 patients. There are two negative pressure rooms with an anti-room. There is a pharmacist present on the unit to assist the RNs with medication questions/concerns. Multidisciplinary rounds occur every Monday through Friday. Rounds involve all aspects of the healthcare team, including the patient and family. Education Requirements Graduate of NLN accredited School of Nursing License/Certification Requirements Current NJ-RN License (Registered Nurse); Current American Heart Association BLS Certification (Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers); Certain specialties may require advanced certification (i.e., ACLS, NALS, PALS)
