Job Summary and Qualifications The Registered Nurse coordinates and delivers high quality, patient-centered care in accordance with the nature and specific requirements of the department, and consistent with the scope and standards of practice for the relevant state and specialty. Assesses patient pain regularly to promote effective pain management, including reassessments after appropriate intervention. Performs procedures, monitoring, or other functions as ordered by the medical provider(s). Documents the administration of care in the patient medical record in a timely and thorough manner. Performs exceptional care by responding promptly to patient requests. Strives to anticipate patient needs and resolve them proactively. Teaches patients/families/caregivers about patient medical condition, patient status, treatment plan, medications and possible side effects, and follow-up measures. Translates complex medical terminology to ensure complete understanding. Teaches patients/families/caregivers about any non-medicinal follow-up measures, such as healthy diet and exercise, disease prevention, and/or other lifestyle changes. Prepares patients and families/caregivers for future self-management. St. David’s Women’s Center of Texas , located at St. Davids North Austin Medical Center , is recognized by the State of Texas as a Level IV Maternal Facility. This means it provides the highest level of care for pregnant and postpartum patients, especially those with serious or complex medical, surgical, or pregnancy-related conditions, including those at high risk for maternal morbidity or mortality. The center includes a 95+ bed Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) with 30+ private rooms, 10+ rooms for very small babies, and 10+ beds for babies needing neurological care. It also has 35+ labor, delivery, and recovery rooms, including Central Texas’ first low-intervention birthing suites with tubs. There are 95+ postpartum beds, 20+ antepartum beds, and Cesarean section surgical suites. The facility offers 24/7 neonatology coverage, OB/GYN hospitalists, maternal-fetal medicine specialists, lactation consultants, and a midwifery program. It is part of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Maternal-Fetal Medicine Units Network and TexasAIM, and it also provides a high-risk pregnancy navigation and support program. St. Davids Surgical Hospital is part of St. David’s North Austin Medical Center and is the first Level 4 Epilepsy Center in Central Texas for both adults and children. It has its own 24-hour emergency department, a medical-surgical inpatient unit, and a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) for patients ages 17 and under. The hospital is staffed with pediatric emergency physicians, pediatric hospitalists, intensivists, and other specialists who are specially trained to care for children. It also includes certified child-life specialists who help kids feel more comfortable during their hospital stay. Please apply to this posting by August 5 if you are interested in any of the units below: Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) 5 West, Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) is a 23-bed mixed acuity Heart and Vascular unit. 14 of our patient rooms are dedicated to service ICU level patients including management of swan Ganz catheters, intra-aortic balloon pumps, Impellas, ventilated patients, and CRRT. The remaining 9 beds serve intermediate level patients. The nurses on this unit can manage a-lines, lumbar drains, and titrate cardiac drips on the intermediate care patients. Our patient population consists of primarily Advance Heart Failure, Cardiology, and Vascular surgery patients. This unit functions as the stepdown unit for the Ashley River Tower offering a higher level of care for the many specialties in this building. Nurse: patient ratios range from 1:1-1:3 based on patient acuity. This highly engaged team is innovative, dynamic, and fast-paced. Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU) The CTICU is a 21 bed Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit specializing in everything Cardiac Surgery. We care for patients post operatively after coronary bypass, valve replacements/repairs, and aortic dissection repairs. We also care for patients after thoracic surgery including esophagectomies, and pneumonectomies. We are the only heart and lung transplant center in the State and are top 5 in the nation for LVAD implantation. We care for patients that have many different methods of mechanical circulatory support i.e. intraortic balloon pumps, impellas, centrimag, and we are the only adult unit that manages VA ECMO. We are the only unit that is specialized and certified in CSU-ALS which is ACLS for post cardiac surgery. Any one of our beds can be used for emergent surgeries and procedures. Given the fast pace, and high acuity we have an extensive orientation process. There are several opportunities for professional growth, with experienced nurses expanding their skills through Rapid Response or ECMO teams, and engaging in leadership through our highly active RSL/CSL roles. The unit Shared Governance is actively contributing to any practice changes and workflow improvements. Medical Surgical Intensive Care Unit (MSICU) MSICU is an 18-bed unit that provides care to adult patients covering various medical and surgical patient populations. The various medical diagnoses include multi-system organ failure, hematology/oncology, pulmonary hypertension, sepsis, respiratory failure, and post lung transplants. This intensive care unit also has a sub-specialty in digestive disease and cares for patients with renal, endocrine, liver disease, GI surgery and GI hemorrhage, pancreatitis, and islet cell transplants. In addition, MSICU cares for the obstetric patients requiring ICU level of care. Staff are trained in advanced hemodynamic monitoring, continuous renal replacement therapy, ECMO, pulmonary artery catheters, and aggressive ventilator therapy. The MSICU has earned the Silver Beacon Award. Specialty Medical ICU (SMICU) The Specialty Medical ICU (SMICU) is an 18-bed intensive care unit located on the 5th floor within the historic Main Hospital. The unit cares for a diverse patient population, including those with pulmonary, renal, hepatic, gastrointestinal bleeding, endocrine, overdose, and infectious disease conditions. In the future, the SMICU will also expand its scope to include the care of fresh liver transplant patients. The SMICU serves as the designated Sharing Hope organ donor unit, playing a critical role in the coordination and management of organ donation. The unit is highly praised for its strong focus on teamwork, quality, and patient safety, which are deeply embedded in daily practice. Our nursing care is facilitated by multidisciplinary teams to include but not limited to medical staff, fellows, residents, advanced practitioners, pharmacy, respiratory, and physical therapy to address all multi-system variances. The care we provide is differentiated by nurse-to-patient ratio, the need for advanced invasive monitoring, and the use of mechanical and pharmacological life sustaining therapies (mechanical ventilation, vasopressors, hemodynamic monitoring, continuous dialysis). It is part of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Maternal-Fetal Medicine Units Network and TexasAIM, and it also provides a high-risk pregnancy navigation and support program. St. Davids Surgical Hospital is part of St. David’s North Austin Medical Center and is the first Level 4 Epilepsy Center in Central Texas for both adults and children. It has its own 24-hour emergency department, a medical-surgical inpatient unit, and a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) for patients ages 17 and under. The hospital is staffed with pediatric emergency physicians, pediatric hospitalists, intensivists, and other specialists who are specially trained to care for children.
