Surgical Technologists, sometimes called “scrub techs”, assist in surgical procedures under the supervision of surgeons and Registered Nurses. They help to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and maintain a sterile field. Surgical Technologists perform a variety of functions, such as checking supplies and equipment, setting up sterile tables, performing appropriate counts, draping the sterile field, passing instruments to the surgeon and assistant during the procedure, preparing sterile dressing and cleaning instruments for terminal sterilization. This is a great hands-on learning opportunity that will allow you to enhance your skills each and every day. A caregiver in this role will work nights. Orientation is 3 months working Monday through Friday, from 7:00am to 3:30pm. After orientation, the shift will be 6:00pm to 7:30am (13 hours). There is no required call rotation when working in a night shift position. A caregiver who excels in this role will: Perform scrub functions and assist in circulating functions under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN). Set up the sterile table and ensure appropriate supplies, drugs and equipment are available. Assists RN in counting all sponges, instruments, etc. at appropriate times during surgery. Assist in gowning and gloving surgical team members and draping patients. Ensure aseptic condition is maintained by the scrubbed surgical team through the procedure. Participate in the intraoperative “timeout.” Collect, identify and label specimens removed during surgical procedures and gives specimens to circulator for disposition. Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: Graduate of a Surgical Technology Program, accredited through Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program (CAAHEP) or Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) OR Completion of military surgical technology program will meet the educational requirements of an accredited Surgical Technology Program Certification of either CST or TS-C required for candidates who have not completed an accredited Surgical Technology program: Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) Certified Tech in Surgery (TS-C) through the National Center for Competency Training (NCCT) Basic Life Support (BLS) through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Physical Requirements: Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Assists with cleaning of tables, floors, etc. Promotes safe environment for patient and all health care members: Instruments, sharps and sponges are counted according to policy. Identifies and transfers surgical specimens according to O.R. policy. Performs safety check on all equipment (power instruments, etc.) for proper assembly, completeness and operation before it is used. Correctly prepares and labels medications including dosages and percentages to be used during the case according to type of procedure to be done and/or doctor’s preference card. Keeps operative field free of unused instruments, equipment, and sharps. Receives instruments from surgeon. Keeps instruments clean by wiping blood and tissue from instruments. Removes unnecessary articles from the operative field. Follows universal precautions according to hospital policy. About the Role The Certified Surgical Technologists is an allied health professional, who is an integral part of the team of medical practitioners providing surgical care to patients. The Certified Surgical Technologists work under the supervision of a surgeon to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures, ensuring that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. The Certified Surgical Technologist shall possess expertise in the theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique and combine the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and technologies to facilitate a physician's performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. POSITION’S ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES: The Certified Surgical Technologist handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure. Understands the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon. Knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative. procedure and is constantly on vigil for maintenance of the sterile field. Duties are as follows: STERILE PROCESSING DUTIES: Decontaminates and sterilizes instruments, medical supplies, and equipment, and assembles, wraps, and sterilizes trays of instruments. Follows proper Standard Precautions while in decontamination and sterilization areas. Monitors biological and chemical wash solution to ensure quality and consistency for decontamination of instruments and medical equipment. Sort mismatched sets of instruments, trays, and medical equipment and makes them available to sterile processing customers in a timely manner. Restocks, labels, and maintains inventory, submits requisitions, collects, and distributes instruments, trays, crash carts, and facility medical equipment. Performs environmental maintenance duties and assists in maintaining inventory levels in sterile processing, the operating room, and in equipment storage areas. Verifies that equipment functions properly, requisitions for equipment maintenance, repair, or replacement, and removes defective equipment. Maintains a clean work area. Assists with maintaining established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, and quality improvement, safety, and environmental and infection control standards. SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST DUTIES: Checks supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedure. Sets up sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions needed for procedure. Performs appropriate counts with circulator prior to the operation and before incision is closed. Helps in draping sterile field. Passes instruments, etc., to surgeon during procedure. Maintains highest standard of sterile technique during procedure. Prepares sterile dressings. Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization. Assists other members of team with terminal cleaning of room. Assists in prepping room for the next patient. All other duties as assigned. ROBOTIC DUTIES: Able to answer both clinical and technical questions about the da Vinci surgical system Tasked with plan for sustainable growth of the robotics program Serves as main point of contact Enables surgeon access and facilitates best in class case support experience Targets and supports new surgeons interested in surgical procedures using the da Vinci system Coordinates and attends regularly scheduled robotic Steering Committees and provides operations updates on the progression of the program Works to configure the operation room ® in a way that is efficient for the use of a da Vinci surgical system Works with materials management to order da Vinci surgical instruments and accessories as needed Maintains lean par levels of all da Vinci surgical instruments and accessories that should be in stock Creates a metric tracking system for robotic cases to set benchmarks and evaluates progress towards the goals in reduction of non-operative time and more efficient OR workflow Based off usage metrics based on instrument utilization data, determines where it makes sense to create trays and where instruments should be peeled back Works with surgeons and nursing staff to lean out preference cards and determine which standing orders are needed for all robotic assisted procedures Works with the OR manager or charge nurse to ensure operating rooms, designated for robotic-assisted surgical cases, are properly staffed Works with the nursing staff to ensure robotic rooms have all ancillary supplies needed for robotic surgeries performed with a da Vinci surgical system Establishes a training pathway for all new hires or those that will be working in the OR designated for robotic-assisted surgical procedures, including assigning online modules, providing an in-service on the da Vinci surgical system, and observing cases Establishes clinical competencies for all staff involved in robotic-assisted surgical procedures and explains guidelines for annual testing to ensure those competencies are met Educates the OR staff on updates or new products used within robotic-assisted surgical procedures Troubleshoots any issues with the da Vinci surgical system during surgical procedures Initiates RMA process for damaged instruments and scopes Assists as scrub nurse or First Assist at patient side during robotic-assisted surgical procedures if applicable Responsible for maintaining, updating, and collecting the daily wrap-up sheet Responsible for storing other da Vinci surgical system documentation in a centralized location or dedicated binder such as a Communication Binder. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: 3 Years’ experience as a Surgical Technologist Preferred, or equivalent Military training. Two (2) years of experience as a surgical technologist and/or has demonstrated competency in two (2) or more specialty areas.
