Job Summary THA's Kind Clinic Medical Assistant will aid with the delivery of patient care during the respective clinic hours of operation. This role will report to the Clinic Administrator. Core Functions: Effectively room and prepare patients for clinic visit. Obtain and record patient medical histories, including allergies, family, social and surgical history and other information for medical records. Acquire vital signs. Assist with phlebotomy and lab specimen processing as needed during clinic hours of operation. Dispense medication and provide STI treatments to include injections in accordance with clinician directive and existing Standing Delegation Orders (SDOs). Act as a liaison between the laboratory, clinician, and patients. Evaluate provider requests for accuracy and completeness, orders, verify labeling/identification, and follow appropriate protocol in handling specimens. Thoroughly clean/stock exam rooms. Assist clinic staff and Clinic Administrator in monitoring inventory levels and verifies receipt of supplies in accordance with established policies and procedure. Utilize and promotes infection control measures and universal precautions to maintain high quality of health and safety during clinic operation. Complete annual clinical competencies. Maintain a system of confidentiality according to clinic’s policies and procedures and per HIPAA guidelines. Participate in staff planning, in-service, and other meetings as needed. Perform other duties as assigned. Key Performance Indicators List two to five measurable tasks that are key to indicating satisfactory performance in this role: Adherence to all clinical and administrative protocols for role. Adherence to all privacy and ethical protocols of organization Participation in continuous improvement initiatives Education and/or Licensure: High school diploma or GED. Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program, Certificate of Registration as a Medical Assistant, or formal medical services training in the United States Armed Forces preferred. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required or must be obtained no later than two days after hire date. Texas Phlebotomy Certification required within 2 days of hire (if not current at time of hire). Experience: 2+ years direct patient care experience. Working knowledge of infection control and universal precautions. Familiarity with a CLIA-waived laboratory testing a strong plus. Experience with LGBTQIA+ and/or other marginalized communities a strong plus. Microsoft Office Skills with an ability to become familiar with company specific programs or software. Additional Requirements – Bi-lingual (English/Spanish) a plus. Knowledge Skills and Abilities Must have basic PC skills that include a combination of working in a Windows Operating System and Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel. Understands the importance of maintaining confidentiality; able to maintain confidentiality under HIPAA standards. Must have the ability to exercise a high degree of diplomacy and tact; excellent customer services and interpersonal communication skills; Cultural sensitivity and demonstrated ability to work with diverse people groups. Well-developed verbal and written communication skills in English; Additional language abilities desirable. Ability to work well under pressure with minimal supervision. Ability to effectively interact with persons of widely diverse roles, backgrounds, cultures, and socio-economic classes, those in crises or resistant or negative toward organizations. Ability to apply time management practices to prioritize, schedule and complete work effectively to comply with mandated policies and deadlines. Ability to work with professionals from various partners and organizations. Usually works forty (40) hours per week, some weekends may be required. Meal Preparation and Hydration Depending on the assignment, caregivers may be responsible for: Planning meals according to client preferences Following approved dietary instructions Preparing meals and snacks Assisting with feeding Encouraging regular fluid intake Observing and documenting food and fluid intake Assisting with grocery organization Following safe food-handling practices Washing dishes Cleaning meal-preparation areas Reporting concerns related to appetite, swallowing or hydration Difficulty swallowing, coughing during meals, choking, vomiting or significant refusal to eat or drink must be reported immediately. Light Housekeeping Caregivers may be responsible for maintaining a clean, safe and organized client environment. Responsibilities may include: Tidying the client’s immediate living space Dusting Sweeping Vacuuming Mopping approved areas Washing dishes Cleaning frequently touched surfaces Laundry and linen changes Cleaning the client’s bathroom Organizing care supplies Removing trash Keeping walkways and emergency-access areas clear Reporting unsafe conditions or needed repairs Housekeeping responsibilities are limited to the client’s approved service area and assigned care-plan tasks. Non-Medical Health Support Helping Hearts provides non-medical personal support. Caregivers must remain within their authorized role and follow the client’s approved care plan. Depending on the assignment, responsibilities may include: Providing medication reminders Assisting with approved blood glucose monitoring Documenting readings when required Observing food and fluid intake Monitoring the client’s physical, emotional and behavioral condition Reporting pain, swelling, bruising, redness or skin concerns Reporting falls, injuries or changes in mobility Reporting confusion or unusual behavior Following established emergency procedures Contacting the Helping Hearts office immediately when concerns arise Completing accurate electronic documentation Caregivers must report concerns rather than independently diagnose or treat them. Caregivers must not assume that someone else has already reported a change in condition. Medication Reminders Medication support is limited to the responsibilities authorized in the client’s approved non-medical care plan. Caregivers may: Provide scheduled reminders. Assist with an approved prefilled medication planner. Place approved medications in a cup when directed. Remind the client to self-administer their medication. Document reminders and client responses. Report refusals, missed doses or other concerns. Caregivers must not independently administer medication, change medication instructions or provide medical advice outside their authorized scope. Transportation When required and authorized, caregivers may: Transport clients to appointments. Assist with approved errands. Transport clients to social activities. Help clients enter and exit the vehicle. Secure mobility equipment appropriately. Follow all client-specific transportation instructions. Maintain a clean, safe and insured vehicle. Report any transportation concern immediately. Caregivers may only transport clients when the assignment has been approved and all transportation requirements have been satisfied. Night and Overnight Shift Expectations Caregivers working night or overnight assignments must remain fully awake, alert and attentive throughout the entire shift. Nighttime responsibilities may include: Completing scheduled safety checks Monitoring the client’s condition Assisting with toileting and incontinence care Repositioning the client Providing medication reminders when authorized Responding immediately when the client needs assistance Completing approved nighttime housekeeping responsibilities Maintaining a clean and safe environment Preparing the client’s environment for the morning routine Documenting care and observations in real time Sleeping, napping, dozing, lying down to rest or closing your eyes for extended periods is strictly prohibited, even when the client is sleeping. Failure to remain awake and attentive may result in immediate removal from the assignment and additional corrective action. Physical Requirements Caregiving can be physically demanding. Applicants must be able to safely perform the essential responsibilities of an accepted assignment, with or without a reasonable accommodation. Clock in and out from the approved client location. Remain with the client until the scheduled end of the shift. Remain until properly relieved when continuous care is required. Notify the office if a client or family asks them to arrive late, leave early or change the scheduled hours. Complete all required documentation before the end of the shift. Failure to report for an accepted shift, leaving a client without authorization or failing to follow safety procedures may result in removal from the assignment or additional corrective action. On the Neuro/Tele side they provide care to patients that have had a transient ischemic attack (TIA), stroke, confusion, seizures and VP shunt placement. Nurses are Stroke Certified through the Joint Commission. This position has the opportunity to acquire Med/Surg or Neuro Certifications.
