Triages patients quickly and efficiently per the Emergency Department’s policies specific to Triage. Documents a comprehensive patient record that is organized and complete, reflecting all aspects of nursing care provided. Anticipates patient’s needs and assists the provider during the examination and procedures. Provides psychological support based on assessed need. Utilizes multiple teaching methods. Discharge instructions are reviewed and understanding acknowledged by the patient/family. Assess community resources as indicated. Supervises Emergency Department Technicians. Serves as a preceptor for students and employees (i.e. EMS, nursing, new employees). Works independently using the Nurse Practice Act, hospital policies, and professional judgment. Makes recommendations to improve the Emergency Department’s Standards of Care. MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED: Possession of a current or compact state license as a registered nurse issued/defined by the State of Iowa. One year of RN experience preferred OR new graduate if the candidate has completed senior nursing preceptorship at Mercy Emergency or previous experience as an emergency department technician or experience in a pre-hospital environment. Responsibilities Provides considerate respectful care focused upon the patient's individual needs to ensure patient satisfaction. Consistently includes patient and family in the development of an individualized plan of care. Administers medication as needed following CSHS policies and manufacturer's instructions. Takes immediate and appropriate actions in the event of a medication variance occurrence. Recognizes changes in patient condition and/or emergency situations and takes immediate and appropriate actions. Participates in unit conferences to discuss quality issues and quality improvement strategies. Offers ideas to improve processes for patient safety. Delegates components of care to non-professional caregivers as appropriate. Follows up on any delegated components of care and assignments given. Makes decisions that demonstrate knowledge of nursing practice; utilizes sound nursing judgment in clinical and patient care management situations. Demonstrates critical thinking skills in the care of patients and in the coordination of care to assure the best patient outcomes. Follows CSHS Pain Assessment policy. Successfully functions as a Resource Nurse, making decisions in the absence of the Clinical Leader and/or the Nurse Manager. Supports cost containment through efficient use of equipment, supplies and other pertinent resources. Recognizes adverse reaction to medications and takes immediate and appropriate action. Evaluates the patient's needs for discharge and accesses appropriate resources for the patient and/or family. Consistently provides written and verbal education to patients and/or families. Successfully functions as a preceptor/mentor to students and new staff members. Consistently promotes teamwork within the unit and between departments. Consistently adheres to hospital policy regarding the insertion, maintenance and removal of foley catheters, if applicable. Able to verbalize and demonstrate proper rationale and techniques surrounding all aspects of indwelling urinary catheter care as per policy #4668. Fulfills the requirements for competencies and completion of annual mandatories surrounding indwelling urinary catheters. Supports operations by demonstrating ability and willingness to float between units as an RN and provides 1:1 patient observation when deemed necessary Qualifications Associate’s degree in Nursing required Bachelor's degree in Nursing required within 3 years of hire. Minimum two years pediatric ICU or ED Peds experience or experience in ED that cares for pediatrics, as an RN requried. RN license/NJ required. BLS certification required. Specialty credentialing required to be achieved within the first year and maintained thereafter include Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and CSMC IV Certification. Stroke Education requirements to be achieved within First Year then maintained thereafter. Specialty professional nursing certification preferred. Non-violent Crisis Intervention certification -- New hires must receive certification within 3 months of hire.
