Job Description The Outpatient Pulmonary Clinical Nurse II, under the supervision of the Clinical Manager and Practice Manager, delivers direct patient care to adult pulmonary and ILD outpatient population in multiple sub-specialties. This nurse is experienced and highly skilled with an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the pulmonary disease process, the major treatment modalities, symptom management, supportive care, and patient education. At this operational level, the nurse proactively embraces the Pulmonary Nursing Society/Standards of Pulmonary Nursing practice to utilize the nursing process for assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation to provide safe, therapeutic care. The nurse utilizes an interdisciplinary approach across the continuum of care with adherence to National Patient Safety Goals set forth by regulatory requirements. The nurse is recognized and utilized as a clinical resource and demonstrates investment in the overall forward movement of the unit and the organization. S/he is responsible for maintaining a safe environment for patients and staff, and for daily operations. The Clinical Nurse II utilizes the nursing process for patient care assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation to provide safe, therapeutic clinical care. All components of nursing care will be individualized to meet the patient’s physiological and psychosocial developmental level and needs. S/he consistently projects a professional and courteous demeanor. S/he will assist with management of patient care administered by the UCSF Pulmonary Center physicians and other members of the clinical and nursing team. Responsibilities Conduct patient assessments, identifying needs and responses to medical regimens through observation and documentation of signs/symptoms and emotional state. Work cooperatively with the healthcare team to develop short and long-term goals for patient care, considering physical, emotional, and cultural factors. Provide individualized nursing care, considering patients' growth and developmental needs, and demonstrate an understanding of age-specific care requirements. Prepare and instruct patients on specific diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, perform treatments, and maintain safe practice with equipment. Evaluate and document patients' responses to nursing care, ensuring an understanding of cognitive, physical, and emotional maturation processes. Administer medication, maintain pharmacology knowledge, and comply with infection control and safety policies. Respond appropriately in emergencies, demonstrating knowledge of emergency procedures and equipment. Maintain open communication with the healthcare team, ensuring continuity of care for patients and families. Organize activities based on patient needs, adjusting clinical support to reflect practice priorities. Foster positive public relations, demonstrating effective communication skills, cultural sensitivity, and a supportive manner. Qualifications Required Qualifications: This position requires flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations. Minimum 2 years’ recent RN experience in an outpatient medical specialty setting (within the past 2 years). Training and experience with electronic health record. Ensures staffing resources are utilized appropriately and shifts resources to meet both patient and unit needs. Partners with a multidisciplinary team in meeting the clinical needs of patients and families. Rounds with patients, families and team members to promote patient family experience and quality patient care. Resolves operational and patient/family issues, making decisions that are inclusive of multiple perspectives and solves underlying problems. Assists team members in achieving unit outcomes, performance and professional development standards; identifies opportunities for continual improvement. Champions clinical practice and professional growth by working with the CNE/CNS to meet the educational needs of the unit/department and by monitoring and evaluating staff competencies. Develops, coaches, and evaluates team members. Mentors team members in creating/evaluating projects focused on improving clinical practice. Provides advice to Clinical Manager on decisions involving hiring, terminations, promotions, and disciplinary actions as required. Monitors expenditures for unit/department and participates in the development of budget recommendations. Position requires regular and predictable attendance. Employees are held accountable for all duties of this job. Minimum Qualifications EDUCATION – Bachelor’s degree in Nursing. Master’s degree in Nursing or a directly related health care field is preferred. EXPERIENCE – Three years of clinical experience. Previous Level III or Level IV NICU experience preferred. LICENSURE – Registered Nurse (RN) CERTIFICATION(S) – BLS/CPR from the American Heart Association with at least 6 months left before expiration is required upon hire. ANCC recognized certification in clinical specialty. Depending on the unit/department, employees may also be required to have a Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Adult Advanced Life Support (ACLS), and/or Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC).
