The Registered Nurse (RN) at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute provides evidence-based oncology nursing care across inpatient care units. Shift: Day shift and night shift positions available Schedule: 36 hours per week, with rotating weekends This Position Is Eligible For Full Time Benefits Relocation assistance may be available for candidates relocating more than 150 miles, subject to Dana-Farber policy. Primary Duties And Responsibilities Deliver direct oncology nursing care, including comprehensive assessment, individualized care planning, symptom management, and evaluation of patient outcomes for adult oncology patients and families. Administer antineoplastic agents and supportive therapies per protocols and ONS standards; verify orders, complete independent double checks, and monitor for and manage infusion reactions and adverse events. Manage central venous access devices (e.g., ports, PICCs); perform access, maintenance, blood draws, and blood product transfusions per policy; ensure safe use of infusion equipment and PPE. Provide patient and family education on diagnosis, treatment plans, self-care, side-effect management, and discharge instructions; coordinate multidisciplinary resources and community referrals. Document care in Epic in accordance with regulatory and institutional standards; maintain accurate medication administration records, flowsheets, and patient education documentation. Participate in quality and safety activities (e.g., safety huddles, infection prevention, hazardous drug handling, Joint Commission readiness) and support clinical research protocols as applicable (e.g., protocol adherence, specimen handling, adverse event reporting). Collaborate with physicians, advanced practice providers, pharmacists, social workers, and research staff; contribute to effective team communication, handoffs, and patient throughput. May serve as charge nurse, preceptor, or mentor; provides functional direction to licensed and unlicensed support personnel in accordance with scope of practice and institutional policies. Knowledge, Skills And Abilities Proficiency in chemotherapy/immunotherapy administration per ONS guidelines; working knowledge of oncology pharmacology and side-effect profiles. Competence in central line care and infusion therapy; ability to administer and monitor blood products per policy. Ability to recognize and respond to oncologic emergencies (e.g., infusion reactions, febrile neutropenia, tumor lysis syndrome) and escalate care appropriately. Strong patient education skills with ability to tailor communication to diverse populations and varying health literacy levels; commitment to culturally competent, trauma-informed care. Proficiency with EMR systems (Epic preferred); accurate and timely clinical documentation and electronic medication administration. Knowledge of infection prevention, hazardous drug handling (USP ), PPE requirements, and universal precautions. Effective triage, prioritization, and time management skills for varying acuity in a fast-paced ambulatory environment. Collaborative team skills; ability to work across interdisciplinary teams and support clinical research activities. Critical thinking, clinical judgment, problem-solving, and ability to function effectively under stress. A Bachelor’s degree in nursing is strongly preferred, and candidates with an associate degree must complete a BSN within 4 years. 1 year of recent experience as a Registered Nurse preferred. Acute care nursing experience preferred; oncology/hematology experience in an Inpatient or ambulatory infusion clinic setting preferred. Experience with electronic medical records (e.g., Epic) preferred. License/Certification/Registration Required Current unrestricted Massachusetts Registered Nurse (RN) license required. ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy/Immunotherapy Certificate required or obtained within 6 months of hire (role-dependent). Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) preferred. Basic Life Support (BLS) required; Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) preferred depending on work area. Supervisory Responsibilities No Patient Contact Direct and continuous contact with adult oncology patients and families in an inpatient environment. Provide pre procedural instructions, providing the patient with opportunity to ask clinical questions without requiring separate call back. Create patient specific premedication regiment in collaboration with procedure APP. Obtain IV access and preprocedural lab work. Administered preprocedural procedural medications, titrating according to specific patient needs. Also administer chemotherapy and performs procedures safely and efficiently in accordance with Institute policy. May administer blood transfusions. Work as co-sign to Intrathecal Chemotherapy administered by APP. Assists in emergency nursing procedures necessary for prompt control of changes in patient`s physical condition. Maintains awareness of procedural suite activities and works with the Procedure Suite team to maximize workflow. Keeps abreast of changing techniques in procedural nursing and maintains a high level of expertise in critical care. Responsible for intraprocedural monitoring of patients not limited to maintain active airway, assesses effective circulation and respiration via capnography and telemetry monitoring. Safely recover patients post sedation, perform discharge teaching, and evaluate safety of patient discharge. Coordinate correct research specimen collection with research coordinators. Maintain Joint commission readiness. Provide as needed support for biopsy specimen collection when not acting in a procedural sedation role. Knowledge, Skills And Abilities Demonstrated ability to work as an effective member of an interdisciplinary team. License/Certification/Registration Required Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, or State of New Hampshire as appropriate required. Key Responsibilities: • Delivery of comprehensive clinical care to infants, children, and adolescents with acute or chronic medical conditions requiring intensive nursing and medical support outside of the ICU setting • Collaborate closely with the supervising physician to conduct thorough patient assessments, obtain medical histories, perform physical examinations, and diagnose developmental and health concerns • Active participation in PIMCU medical rounds including presentation, development and implementation of evidence-based treatment plans • Opportunity for participation in quality improvement and research initiatives • Setting is a fast-paced inpatient environment, requiring collaboration across multiple consulting teams and interdisciplinary colleagues • Orientation includes a structured, individualized onboarding program that is tailored to the APP’s experience level, clinical background, and learning needs. Schedule: Inpatient, 12-hour shifts, 36 hours/week with up to 50% rotating days/nights and up to every 3rd weekend. Holiday coverage depending on service needs. Minimum Qualifications Education: • Master’s degree in Nursing or Physician Assistant Studies Experience: • A minimum of 2+ years inpatient pediatric experience with preference for those with experience in caring for higher acuity or higher complexity patients. • 1+ year of Pediatric NP or PA experience preferred • Would consider new graduate nurse practitioner with recent pediatric inpatient RN experience, minimum 2 years ideal with a similar patient population.
