About this Job: General Summary of Position Responsible for patient assessment pre and intra procedural care of patients undergoing invasive procedures or sedation in the Department of Radiology. This is accomplished according to an established plan of care under the direction of the Director of Operations and Radiology Nurse Coordinator in charge of Nursing who is a licensed Registered Nurse. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy policies procedures and standards. Primary Duties and Responsibilities Provides pre-procedure telephone instruction and education to patients relating to their procedure. Performs pre-procedure assessment appropriate documentation of assessment pre-procedure preparation of the patient which includes intravenous access review of allergies and laboratory results application of monitoring equipment and site preparation as indicated. Monitoring is performed intra-procedure according to Radiology/Nursing policy to assess vital signs pallor responsiveness level of comfort emotional status; Neuro status and circulation are assessed according to Radiology policy and as indicated by the procedure; provides patient care utilizing the nursing process; information related to changes in patient's condition is relayed accurately and efficiently to the physician. Appropriate care and treatment are implemented; acts as a patient advocate; follows universal precautions. Administers and titrating medications appropriately and in the correct increment dosages knowing the pharmacological effects and side effects of the medications being administered. Assesses and documents the patient's response to medications administered. Institutes appropriate treatment to medication induced changes in the patient's condition. Administers emergency drugs and utilizes emergency equipment knowledgeably and appropriately. Post-procedure care is arranged prior to procedure date unless the case is an add-on. Performs and documents an appropriate and complete post-procedure assessment. Gives a complete and concise report to the department receiving the patient post procedure. Discharge instructions and patient/family education are provided according to Radiology policy. Performs daily equipment drug and quality assurance checks as required by Radiology policy. Documentation is performed accordingly. Reports equipment failures and assures repairs are performed; Arranges for replacement of expired or used supplies. Participates in the development implementation and evaluation of Performance Improvement and Research activities. Participates in quality improvement initiatives. About this Job: Unit Details The Neonatal ICU at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, a five-time designated Magnet® hospital, is a 36-bed unit which provides expert nursing care for infants with many critical diagnoses. It is one of two Level IV NICUs in Washington, D.C., which is the highest level designated by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Some of the most seen diagnoses are: Respiratory Distress Syndrome Extreme Prematurity Neonatal Encephalopathy Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension Sepsis/Septic Shock Neurological Disorders Genetic and/or Metabolic Disorders Gastrointestinal Disorders Surgical needs Ours is the only NICU in the Washington, D.C. region where a Clinical Nurse can participate in high-risk deliveries, be trained as an ECMO tech and participate in both flight and ground transports. The Transplant IMC shares a floor with its own Surgical Transplant Intensive Care Unit (ICU), promoting seamless patient throughput between different acuities. This 28-bed unit has been recognized by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) with a BEACON Award for Excellence through 2026. Clinical Nurses on S42 provide expert care to acutely ill adults that are waiting for or have recently received a solid organ transplant (liver, kidney, pancreas, intestine) or have undergone other hepatobiliary surgeries (TACE, liver resection, Whipple). MedStar Georgetown is one of only six centers in the United States that perform intestinal transplants and averages over 100 liver transplants per year. At MedStar Georgetown we also perform kidney and pancreas transplants and serve patients regionally, nationally, and internationally. Additional medical diagnoses include end-stage renal disease, end-stage liver failure, hepatitis, chest pain, cardiac arrhythmias, sepsis, CHF, and GI bleeds. All beds are equipped to provide continuous cardiac and pulse oximetry bedside monitoring, and nurses are essential in managing high-risk medications and performing in-depth discharge teaching. About this Job: General Summary of Position The Medical Assistant performs clinical and administrative duties in an ambulatory care setting under the supervision of a physician/provider and/or a registered nurse. Duties may include venipuncture medication and vaccine administration measurement and documentation of vital signs and assisting providers with patient exams and telephone and clerical support. Position may float to other sites/locations within the system. Primary Duties and Responsibilities Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies procedures quality and safety standards. Complies with governmental regulations and accreditation standards. Assists providers with patient preparation for examination minor office procedures and with the examination and education of patients. Supports other members of the clinical care team assuring optimal best-practice patient flow; manages variable and unpredictable patient volume throughout the workday. Provides clerical support and serves as backup for the Patient Services Coordinator or other team members as needed. Participates in daily team huddles to review and prepare for scheduled patient visits. Screens all patients regardless of visit type for preventative care needs ongoing support barriers to care safety concerns and potential fall risk. Conducts surveillance for transitions of care urgent/emergent care or follow up tasks such as retrieval of documents associated with referrals/testing. Conducts motivational interviews that include patient screening and/or coaching on disease management ability motivation to change learning care needs and community outreach needs. Performs selected patient and laboratory testing consistent with the scope of the practice including but not limited to Point of Care Testing tuberculosis skin testing electrocardiography pulmonary function tests and vision and hearing testing (dependent upon provider and site requirements). Removes sutures/staples after the provider has examined the patient and written the appropriate order. Documents these activities in the patient's electronic medical record (EMR) or other venues based on policy. Documents clinically related activities accurately in the patient's EMR; performs required patient follow-up: to include pap smears Pb levels HIV mammograms and STD's. Collects and processes specimens completes requisitions and documents in logbook or other applicable forms/records. Provides escort for patients and assists with patient discharge activities. Provides chaperoning for patients per policy. Fulfills infection prevention and environmental responsibilities as assigned which many include: Light cleaning during clinic hours and cleaning of equipment. Updates appropriate records of scheduled equipment maintenance and manages drug and medical supply inventories. Provides telephone screening services to gather information from patients determine appropriate disposition and document per established telephone screening protocols. Under onsite provider supervision may insert intravenous catheter for physician initiated IV fluid therapy or administration of intravenous medications. Under direct onsite physician supervision may insert remove and monitor urinary catheter for procedures and prepare and administer oral drugs and injections limited to intradermal subcutaneous and intramuscular. May perform phlebotomy. Utilizes the EMR to propose patient medication refills for provider approval. Completes requisitions for tests (if applicable). Contacts insurance companies for Pre-authorizations for patient medications and specialty referrals including insurance authorization. Floats to other sites/locations within the system as appropriate and performs all duties at multiple sites. Attends scheduled meetings including but not limited to regular staff meetings and training classes for safety infection control OSHA CLIA BLS and others as required. Completed externship program at Medstar Health may be substituted for the 6 months experience in ambulatory care medical office. For Cardiology offices only: 6 months experience working in an ambulatory care medical office or equivalent required or Bachelor's degree in exercise physiology/science or related major or successful completion of a cardiac technician course. Prior experience as a medical assistant preferred Licenses and Certifications Certified Medical Assistant (CMA)-AAMA or equivalent within 1 Year required or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA)-American Medical Technologists equivalent within 1 Year required CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 Days required Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit.
