About The Role A Registered Nurse in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) at Children’s National Hospital provides highly specialized care for critically ill infants and children with congenital, acquired, and complex cardiovascular conditions. The team works collaboratively with other departments that impact EMTC operations. ED patients are registered by Registration/Patient Access/Admission staff who report to the Director of Business Operations. The EMTC provides medical screening and emergency care to over 120,000 patients and families annually with a wide range of problems. Presenting conditions are triaged and assigned to the appropriate treatment area utilizing the Emergency Severity Index (ESI) tool, which takes into account patient acuity and resources needed for management. Presenting conditions range from mild to life-threatening. Mild to moderate conditions include common pediatric conditions such as: common colds, rashes, strep throat, upper respiratory conditions, lacerations, otitis media, strains and sprains, etc. More complex to life threatening conditions include child abuse/neglect, sexual assault, behavioral emergencies, meningitis, sepsis, burns, acute medical, surgical and trauma conditions, anaphylaxis, respiratory and cardiac arrest. The EMTC can provide emergency stabilization and treatment of adults and arrange for transfer to the appropriate treatment site after medical screening and initial interventions. Key Responsibilities Register patients and collect necessary demographic, insurance, and eligibility information Process co-pays and assist with scheduling Prepare patients for examination by obtaining medical history and documenting accurately in the medical record Measure and record vital signs, including blood pressure, pulse, temperature, height, and weight Perform point-of-care testing (e.g., flu, strep, urinalysis, EKG, pregnancy testing) and report results to providers Draw blood and prepare specimens for laboratory analysis Prepare, clean, and stock exam rooms; monitor inventory levels Maintain accurate and timely documentation within the medical record system Support front desk responsibilities, including phone management and patient communication Conduct patient follow-up calls as needed Complete opening and closing duties, including cash handling and end-of-day reconciliation Perform equipment checks, quality control, and troubleshooting as needed Follow all clinical, safety, and organizational policies and procedures Perform additional duties as assigned Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma or equivalent ( required ) Minimum of 1 year of Medical Assistant experience ( required ) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification ( required at time of hire ) Must be obtained through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) Preferred Qualifications Graduate of a Medical Assisting program Experience in urgent care, emergency department, or hospital setting Prior experience with patient registration or front desk responsibilities Certification Requirements Candidates with less than three (3) years of Medical Assistant experience must: Hold an approved Medical Assistant certification OR Obtain certification within 12 months of hire Accepted certifications include: CCMA – Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (NHA) CMA – Certified Medical Assistant (AAMA or CHP) RMA – Registered Medical Assistant (AMT, AAH or ARMA) NCMA – National Certified Medical Assistant (NCCT) NRCMA – Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NAHP) Alternative Qualifications Candidates may be considered without certification at time of hire if they have: 3+ years of Medical Assistant experience , AND 1+ year of experience in an urgent care, emergency department, or hospital setting Additional Accepted Credentials The following credentials may be accepted in lieu of a Medical Assistant certification: Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Registered Nurse (RN) Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Additional Requirements CPOE (Computerized Provider Order Entry) certification must be obtained within 2 weeks of start date Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Proficiency in Medical Assistant clinical duties Strong computer skills and ability to document efficiently High attention to detail and strong organizational skills Ability to work both independently and within a team environment Strong written and verbal communication skills Commitment to providing respectful, patient-centered care Additional Information This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive. About this Job: General Summary of Position THIS IS A PRN POSITION DAY SHIFT Coordinates the operations of the MHVI Arrhythmia Device Clinic at a local and regional level. Supervises clinical support staff. Coordinates and assists in departmental daily operations and the delivery of treatment. Develops protocols standards of practice and educational programs for patients and staff. Manages and maintains device database Primary Duties and Responsibilities Oversees and directs activities of assigned personnel. Makes recommendations regarding hiring salary adjustments disciplinary actions and if necessary terminations. Develops and maintains standards of care for patients with Cardiac Implantable Electronic Devices (CIED). Updates maintains and manages patient device database using current and appropriate software. Utilizes database for efficient electronic record keeping FDA compliance and workflow / clinic resource requirements. Coordinates the day-to-day patient flow in the Arrhythmia Center Device Clinic. Adjusts schedules/patient appointments to meet changing priorities due to severity of patients' needs. Works with physicians and staff to minimize patient wait. * Identifies any problems and recommends corrective action. Evaluates patients' complaints and symptoms and consults physicians for appropriate intervention when situation is warranted Coordinates patient throughput within the Device Clinic. Oversees patient billing scheduling and report generation for pacemaker / defibrillator clinic in a timely manner. Determines best billing practices for the device clinic. Plans conducts implements and reviews educational programs for staff patients and family members regarding function and monitoring of CIED. for. Monitors device performance and safety guidelines. Responds to safety alerts in a timely and appropriate manner. Serves as a resource to other nursing and clinical personnel providing professional advice and guidance in the management of arrhythmia and electrophysiology health care. Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments by routinely reviewing appropriate literature and attending related seminars conferences etc. Collaborates with research coordinators on research proposals for inpatient and outpatient clinical drug and device trials; screens patients for inclusion in studies and determines supply equipment and staffing requirements. . Monitors patient outcomes data and determines policy and guideline recommendations based on data.
