Day (United States of America) Location Outpatient Center in Northbrook Job Description General Summary: The Medical Assistant is responsible for daily clinical work in the outpatient/primary care setting in accordance with the Ambulatory Medical Assistant Scope of Practice. Assists Physicians and other staff under the direction of a Registered Nurse, Advanced Practice Nurse and/or Physician. Essential Job Functions: • Depending on location, performs phlebotomy and specimen processing as directed by delegating provider. • May align to specific or multiple divisions. • Administers, including but not limited to, intramuscular injections, subcutaneous injections, intradermal skin testing, topical medications, ophthalmic drops and nasal spray. • Depending on location, performs ECGs, places Holter monitors and downloads telemetry data. Responsible for ECG and Holter program for a specific location. • Works in conjunction with other staff to maximize clinic flow. • Intervenes appropriately in emergency situations. • Documents data and changes in the Electronic Medical Record. • Provides assistance and or back up support for administrative tasks including but not limited to scheduling patient visits and performing basic “check-in, check out” activities. • Obtains measurements, patient history and other intake activities. • Stocks and maintains the clinic area including ordering of supplies as needed. • Demonstrates knowledge of pertinent aspects and competency with protocols related to the use of chemical disinfection, high level disinfection, and sterilization if required as part of the responsibilities of the role. • Depending on location, directs High Level Disinfection scope cleaning in accordance with defined HLD processes • Completes trainings and education including but not limited to Healthcare Provider CPR. • Other job functions as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: • High school diploma required. • Successful completion of a formal Medical Assistant program. • Possesses 3 or more years of relevant clinical experience. • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) (AAMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) preferred but not required. • Some college, preferred. • Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association. • Excellent communication/listening skills. Substantial interpersonal skills sufficient to work effectively with pediatric patients, families, physicians, nursing and other allied health and medical center personnel. Comer Children's Hospital located in Hyde Park, is a state-of-the-art 172-bed hospital dedicated to caring for infants, children, teens and young adults. Comer Emergency Department is a 21-bed, Level 1 Pediatric Academic Trauma Center dedicated to providing high-quality, evidence-based care to the children of South Side of Chicago and beyond. This position is a 100% onsite opportunity . You will need to be based in the greater Chicagoland area. A staff nurse is a registered professional nurse (RN) who manages patient centered care that is outcome directed. Patient centered care principles and professional nursing practice standards provide the foundation for the nurse to assess, plan, implement and evaluate the care provided. The staff nurse assumes the primary responsibility and accountability for all patient care personally provided and that provided by those directly under her/his supervision. Essential Job Functions Utilizes appropriate assessment skills to determine patient needs. Develops a plan of care for those patients whose needs do not require the expertise of a Case Manager or collaborates with the Case Manager to develop a plan of care for specified patients. Provides input into the development of clinical paths with assigned Case Manager. Uses care plan and/or clinical path in providing patient care. Delegates as appropriate based on patient needs and competencies of staff. Competently performs patient care according to hospital policy and nursing practice within clinical specialty, as documented by the respective clinical skills inventory evaluation and completion of competency days. Evaluates care given and adjusts plan of care to meet the changing needs of the patient. Documents appropriately in patient care records. Prepares and administers medication/treatment according to the physician's orders, utilizing professional knowledge base to assure patient safety. Documents or ensures documentation of all of patient care from admission to discharge according to hospital policies. Incorporates discharge planning into clinical pathway or plan of care to provide patients with smooth transition from hospital to home. Associate Degree Nurses are required to enroll in a BSN program within six (6) to nine (9) months of hire, and make progress toward and complete their BSN degree within 30 months.
