About this Job: Senior Director, Nursing Operations & Patient Care Services Surgical Services, Procedural Services & Women's Services General Summary of Position MedStar Health is seeking an accomplished nursing executive to serve as Senior Director of Nursing Operations & Patient Care Services , providing strategic and operational leadership across a complex portfolio that includes Surgical Services/Operating Room, Cardiac Catheterization Lab, Interventional Radiology, and Women's Services . As a key member of the entity's Division of Nursing leadership team, the Senior Director holds 24-hour accountability for clinical operations, quality and safety, workforce performance, patient experience, financial performance, and strategic execution across assigned areas. Key Leadership Responsibilities Provide strategic and operational leadership for Surgical Services/OR, Cath Lab, Interventional Radiology, Women's Services, and other assigned patient care areas . Maintain 24-hour accountability for clinical, operational, workforce, quality, safety, financial, and administrative performance. Partner with the CNO and executive leadership in developing and executing nursing strategy, organizational priorities, and growth initiatives. Build strong partnerships with physicians, medical staff leaders, nursing leaders, and interdisciplinary teams to advance clinical and operational performance. Drive improvements in patient safety, nursing-sensitive outcomes, patient experience, associate engagement, capacity, throughput, and efficiency . Lead fiscal planning, budget management, productivity, staffing, workforce utilization, and allocation of resources. Evaluate clinical and operational performance data and translate findings into measurable improvement strategies. Lead workforce planning, recruitment, retention, succession planning, and leadership development across assigned areas. Develop and mentor Directors, nurse leaders, and emerging leaders while fostering accountability, collaboration, and professional growth. Champion evidence-based practice, performance improvement, innovation, change management, and nursing excellence. Support Magnet Recognition/Pathway to Excellence standards and a strong professional nursing practice environment. Represent Nursing on hospital and system-level strategic initiatives, committees, and performance improvement efforts. Provide senior nursing executive leadership and assume administrative responsibilities in the absence of the Vice President of Nursing/Chief Nursing Officer as needed. Minimum Qualifications Education Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from a nationally accredited program required. Master's degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, Health Services Administration, or related healthcare field from a nationally accredited program required. Doctoral degree in Nursing, Nursing Leadership, Health Services Administration, or related discipline preferred. Experience 5–7 years of progressively responsible nursing leadership experience required , including significant leadership experience at the Director of Nursing, Patient Care Services Director, or comparable level or above. Minimum of five years of leadership experience within complex clinical and procedural operations required. Demonstrated leadership experience across Surgical Services/Operating Room, Cath Lab, Interventional Radiology, and Women's Services required. Demonstrated experience leading multiple clinical departments, service lines, or areas of significant operational complexity strongly preferred. Experience managing budgets, workforce productivity, staffing, quality and safety outcomes, patient experience, and operational performance required. Demonstrated success partnering with physicians and other clinical leaders to improve operational and clinical outcomes required. Key Responsibilities Respond to and evaluate urology, gastroenterology, general surgery consultations from the Emergency Department, hospitalists, and other inpatient services Perform comprehensive histories and physical examinations focused on acute and chronic urologic conditions Present findings and collaborate with the urologist to develop appropriate diagnostic and treatment plans Evaluate and assist in the management of common urologic conditions, including urinary retention, hematuria, urinary tract obstruction, nephrolithiasis, urinary tract infections, and other acute urologic presentations Order and interpret appropriate laboratory studies, imaging, and diagnostic testing in collaboration with the supervising urologist Perform appropriate bedside urologic procedures within the APP’s training, competency, privileges, and scope of practice Assist with difficult urinary catheter placement and management of urinary drainage devices as clinically appropriate Participate in daily inpatient rounding and management of hospitalized urology patients Provide postoperative evaluation and ongoing care for patients following urologic procedures and surgery Monitor patient progress and communicate changes in clinical condition to the urologist and multidisciplinary care team Coordinate discharge planning, patient education, and outpatient follow-up with the urology practice Educate patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, procedures, medications, and follow-up care Collaborate closely with Emergency Department physicians, hospitalists, nursing, case management, and other clinical teams to facilitate timely and efficient patient care Support appropriate escalation of urgent or emergent urologic conditions to the attending urologist Maintain timely, accurate, and comprehensive documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR) Participate in quality improvement, patient safety, clinical workflow, and patient experience initiatives Required Qualifications Education & Licensure Nurse Practitioner: Master’s degree from an accredited nursing program Physician Assistant: Graduation from an accredited PA program Active Maryland license (or ability to obtain) Current DEA license and Maryland Controlled Dangerous Substance (CDS) license Current BLS certification (American Heart Association or approved provider) Unrestricted license with no history of suspension or revocation Eligible for participation with all payers Skills & Experience Multispecialty or cross-specialty clinical experience is preferred, particularly experience supporting complementary surgical specialties such as Urology/Gastroenterology or Urology/General Surgery.
