Surgical Technologist (Per Diem)

Purpose of Position: Assists in a variety of surgical procedures/operations under the direct supervision of the surgeon, anesthesiologist/CRNA and the professional registered nurse. Description Must be courteous to patients, visitors, physicians, volunteers, and other employees of the organization. Demonstrates a good technical knowledge of the surgical environment, principles of infection control and sterility and uses this knowledge in assisting the Registered Nurse and Surgeon to provide a safe surgical environment which supports quality patient care. Prepares the operating room by setting up surgical instruments and equipment, sterile drapes and sterile solutions. Maintains a sterile environment according to hospital policy and AORN Standards of Care. Able to perform the scrub technician functions for all services and specialties. Assembles sterile and non-sterile equipment and adjusts as necessary to ensure proper working condition. During surgery passes instruments, and other sterile supplies to surgeon and surgeon’s assistants. Holds retractors, cuts sutures, helps count sponges, needles, supplies and instruments. Prepares, cares for, and disposes of specimens taken for laboratory analysis. Assists in applying surgical dressings. Ensures availability of surgeon and case specific instrumentation and equipment following department protocol and surgeon’s preference cards. Assists in transporting patients to the Operating Room and helps position patients on the Operating Room table. Understands and uses the appropriate sterilization methods for special equipment and instruments. Understands the specific use and functioning of all supplies and equipment used in surgical procedures. May operate sterilizers. Lights, suction, and help with diagnostic equipment. Under the direction of the surgeon and Registered Nurse, accurately and safely prepares and labels medications during the “surgical procedure.” Assists in transferring patients to the recovery area. May assist in turnover and restocking the operating room for the next surgical procedure. Respects patients’ inherent right to privacy, dignity and safety. Provides a safe environment for the surgical patient. Assumes responsibility for orientation of new Operating Room employees, as required. Understands the importance of teamwork, consideration and cooperation. Works in conjunction with Registered Nurse to update and maintain equipment and instrumentation of specialty services. Participates in unit staff meetings, in-service programs and educational programs relative to career development. Performs other work-related duties and activities as assigned or requested by his/her immediate supervisor. Assist with secretarial/clerical duties as needed including filing incoming paperwork, copying medical records, answering phones, taking messages and faxing. Purpose of Position: Provide medical services to general surgical patients in the OR, ER, and on in-patient floors during weekdays. Description Perform history and physical examination on general surgical emergency patients upon decision for admission. Ensure adequate medical clearance for general surgical pre-op patients by ordering the necessary consultations and testing. Serve as surgical first assistant to general surgeon doing elective and emergency surgery. Secondary priority will be first assisting for surgical subspecialties such as ENT, Urology, and Gynecology for elective cases will be performed. Provide post-operative care in local Skilled Nursing Facilities at the request of an attending surgeon including wound debridement, wound care, and education to staff, patient, and family as time allows. Collaborate with Chief of General Surgery in coordinating his/her clinical services and defer to his decision regarding clinical priorities and assignment. Collaborate with Chief of General Surgery and Chief Medical Officer of CCH on implementing and refining this position and defer to their decisions regarding programmatic and administrative priorities and assignment. Such an attending is considered a designee of the supervising physician: Chief of General Surgery. Provides care, treatment and services through the successful coordination and completion of a series of processes that include assessment, planning care, providing care, in accordance with departmental and hospital policies and procedures Compensation Pay Range: $38.20 - $77.39 1. Medication Administration a. Demonstrates knowledge of and follows SSH policies and procedures for administering, transcribing, and recording medications. b. Completes medication reconciliation process following SSH policy and procedure. c. Demonstrates proper procedure for the documentation of narcotic withdrawal, administration, verifies count, wastes per policy and resolves narcotic discrepancy. 2. Plan of care/Documentation/Patient Family Centered Care/Patient Experience Develops, discusses, and communicates a prioritized problem list/plan of care for each patient. a. Develop, evaluate and update individualized plan of care for patient and documents outcomes. b. Initiating admission assessment within 8 hours of admissions, identifies and documents patient/family/significant other teaching needs upon admission and throughout hospitalization. c. Continues assessment/reassessment and identifies care needs within established nursing practice. d. Documents all patient care following the department of nursing policy, unit based standards, disease processes (CHF, PNA vaccines) and nurse sensitive indicators (falls, skin, CAUTI) e. Assess/reassesses and documents patient's level of comfort utilizing the appropriate pain scale and the patient's response to each intervention both pharmacological and non-pharmacological per South Shore Hospital policy. f. Works on behalf of patient /family. Seeks help to represent patient/family when they are unable to represent themselves. g. Raises ethical questions and concerns with clinical team. Seeks available resources to help formulate and understand ethical decisions. h. Actively communicates plan of day via white board updating every shift. i. Facilitates discharge/transfer by goal of 12:00pm, communicates barriers utilizing chain of command. 3. Safety/Quality - Foster's a "Culture of Safety" through personal ownership and commitment to a safe environment. a. Verifies patient identification with two identifiers prior to the start of any invasive procedure, including "time out", administration of care, medications, labeled specimen's an documents confirming the correct patient, procedure, site, equipment and consent. b. Complies with the current CDC hand hygiene guidelines through proper handwashing. Adheres to universal precautions, makes appropriate use of personal protective equipment at all times and appropriately disposes of hazardous materials. Maintains awareness of MSDS sheets and how to access. c. Ensures environment meets regulatory requirements at all times. d. Understands and is able to demonstrate individual roles and responsibilities in the event of hospital codes/emergency preparedness. 4. Professional Development: Assumes overall responsibility for own professional development by incorporating evidenced-based practice, research, and performance improvement initiatives as a part of ongoing nursing practice. a.
