The Oncology Registered Nurse is focused on patient assessment, patient education, the coordination of care, administration of therapy, symptom management and supportive care for the Oncology and Hematology patients at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. The Registered Nurse cares for individuals receiving therapy for oncologic and hematologic problems. The nurse’s responsibilities include assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care for a complex patient population. The nurse’s role includes administration of chemotherapy and other medications and infusions, telephone nursing care, direct patient care and charge capture/billing for all services rendered. The nurse provides patient and family education and psychosocial and emotional support. Primary Duties And Responsibilities Delivers expert, evidence-based nursing care to patients and families. Implements nursing process: Assessment, Nursing Diagnosis, Planning, Implementation, Evaluation. Assesses patient and family needs. Evaluates educational and psychological needs of patient and family and incorporates identified needs into the plan of care. Educates patient and family regarding treatment modalities of disease, which may include chemotherapy and radiation therapy and symptom management. Reviews patient’s clinical status and laboratory values pre-treatment and consults with provider when appropriate. Evaluates and determines need for patient referrals to other members of the interdisciplinary needs as appropriate. Identifies appropriate community resources to promote continuity of care and makes appropriate referrals. Manages patient care across the continuum, making appropriate referrals to home care and hospice, as necessary. Prepare and administers chemotherapy/biotherapy and supportive therapy in accordance with ASCO/ONS Guidelines. Recognizes and responds to emergency situations appropriately. Maintains BLS certification. Provides telephone triage according to policies and documents telephone interactions. Performs the following technical skills: Intravenous therapy including peripheral and central venous vascular access devices, including obtaining IV access Safe handling practices for hazardous, cytotoxic and biological agents Chemotherapy administration skills, including vesicant and non-vesicant medications Complies with accepted standards of professional nursing practice, as well as with all licensure/registration requirements applicable to the nursing role. Supports the DFCI Nursing Department Professional Practice Model and Quality Plan. Accurately records charges for all services rendered on the day service. Collaborates with Clinic Assistant to assure accurate inventory of all supplies. Conducts UCA assessments for clients enrolled in the OneCare program; collaboratively participates as a member of the primary care team that includes M.D.s, N.P. /P.A. s, Clinical RNs, behavioral Health Clinicians, Medical Assistants, Case Managers and others. Communicates with clients and/or caregivers including performing outreach as necessary in the greater Boston area for face-to- face contact to homes, hospitals, other facilities, etc. as needed to assess build relationships, client status, and identify new care needs; communicates clearly and professionally with other members of the interdisciplinary team as well as with clients and caregivers. Uses CCA/CareSource and BHCHP’s Electronic Medical Records (EMR) in a timely manner to note all client interactions and outcomes accurately and efficiently; input authorizations for Durable Medical Equipment and other services (Home Health Aide, Skilled Nursing, Physical Therapy, and Personal Care Attendant) based on UCA assessment; bills for UCA assessments into BHCHP’s EMR (EPIC) weekly. Conforms to BHCHP standards of performance around client rights, customer service, infection control, safety procedures and culturally competent care. Remains flexible in duties as role expands and is available for assistance with other projects as needed. Qualifications: Basic Knowledge/Skills: Strong medical and surgical assessment skills. Interest in working with disadvantaged groups; understanding of substance abuse and mental health. Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills; timely and strong communication skills via phone, e-mail, and internal secured messaging systems. Ability to work as part of a team and autonomously; must be able to work with and cooperate with multidisciplinary teams to achieve best patient care. Ability to prioritize and have attention to timetables to complete tasks. Experience with documenting in EMRs: EPIC, Guiding Care, and ECW strongly preferred. Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and ability to adapt to technological changes. Must be well organized, efficient and can work autonomously and within a team. Driver’s license a plus. Education and Experience: Licensed as RN in Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Previous community health center or primary care experience. 1- 2 years RN experience preferred. Demonstrated interest in public health, primary and preventive nursing and working with an under-served population.
