About This Position The Medical Assistant will manage the patient flow throughout the clinic and assist providers in the management and treatment of their patients. Patients come from a variety of backgrounds and various age groups requiring individualized care including infants, children, adolescents, adults, or geriatrics. The focus of the Medical Assistant is on collaborative, supportive and delegated tasks as described in the Blaze Health Medical Assistant scope of practice. Delegable tasks and competencies are specific to the role of the Supervising Nurse and Supervising Provider and are described by the Minnesota Board of Nursing and the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice. The Medical Assistant receives direction and collaborates with the Clinic Supervisor, Clinic Manager, and Providers to meet the defined goals of the customer, shift, department and organization. Communication with the health care team related to progress, concerns, questions or problems that arise are an essential element of the Medical Assistant role. Unit based skills list outlines specific expectations including technical procedures with competency assessment/validation. Department Overview The main operating room at Children’s Minnesota Minneapolis Hospital includes nine surgical suites and one procedure room. Children’s surgery centers are the first and only in Minnesota to be verified as a Level I Children’s Surgery Center by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Children’s Surgery Verification Quality Improvement Program. Achieving Level I verification is the highest level of distinction for health systems that perform complex surgical procedures in newborns, children and teens. The Medical Assistant/EMT Position Responsibilities Include Room patients and complete vital signs and other pertinent physical measurements. Administer medication and clinical procedures according to authorized policy and documented according to HealthPartners policy. This may include DISCUS or AIMS assessment. Review charts for the presence of pertinent information relevant to the patient’s appointment. This may include Prepared Practice work as developed by the team. Provide and document any needed and requested health educational materials to the patient. Handle patient and their records in a private and confidential manner per HealthPartners policy. Seek medical and/or nursing assistance when encountering an acutely ill patient or a patient with a changing condition. Prepare exam rooms and treatment rooms and set up for procedures. Assist provider as needed. Prepare the patient for medical interventions. Prepare charts and records for appointments as indicated by the type of clinic visit according to established practices. Check MSRs for completion and route appropriately. Prepare lab, x-ray and miscellaneous forms as requested Process drug refills according to clinic protocols Monitor station logs as assigned. Facilitate timely and accurate flow of communication within the clinic/location. Accurately receive and relay messages and test results to the appropriate person/location in a manner consistent with clinic practices and/or standards. Gather all necessary and appropriate information from a caller and relay information to the appropriate provider for necessary follow-up. Inform reception desk of provider’s schedule status and assist in coordination of urgent and non-urgent provider schedule changes to ensure patient and provider needs are met. Perform patient correspondence when requested and assist patients in completing forms when appropriate. Prepare and sterilize instruments and equipment according to procedure and OSHA standards. Complete scheduled cleaning requirements for designated work areas. Document completion of work to comply with infection control and OSHA standards Implement other infection control procedures as needed and adhere to protective clothing requirements. Ensure clinic supplies are adequately stocked and well organized. Process and deliver department inventory requests in a timely manner. Routinely check expiration dates and remove or replace outdated supplies. Maintain prescription sample supply cabinet as per clinic protocol Ensure all equipment is properly maintained and adequate records are kept. Ensure inventory of instruments and equipment is current. Ensure instruments and equipment are calibrated as needed and maintained in proper working order.
