A Brief Overview There are two units within cardiac intermediate care. These units p rovide intermediate level care to patients with congenital and acquired heart disease as well as those with primary rhythm abnormalities. Patients include medical and surgical cardiac patients with an age range typically spanning newborns to young adults. Units may also care for patients under local subspecialty care or general pediatrics. Nurses will interview and be hired to one of these two units depending on position availability at time of application. The Clinical Nurse practices at the level of an advanced beginner to expert practitioner of professional nursing in accordance with and guided by the CHOP Nursing Professional Practice Model. The nurse at this level demonstrates competence in caring for patients and families and progresses to caring for those with the most complex problems/highest acuity in the designated clinical area. Provides age/developmentally appropriate care. Care is delivered through RN leadership for patient care within the framework of family-centered care. The Clinical Nurse adheres to the organizational and nursing department mission, vision, and values. Clinical Nurses practice in accordance with the ANA Code of Ethics; the ANA Standards of Clinical Nursing Practice; practice standards of applicable specialty nursing organizations; and CHOP developed standards of nursing practice. A Brief Overview The Cardiac Care Unit (CCU) provides intermediate level care to patients with congenital and acquired heart disease as well as those with primary rhythm abnormalities. Patients include medical and surgical cardiac patients with an age range typically spanning newborns to young adults. These patients may include those with non-invasive ventilation, such as CPAP/BiPaP and stable trachs. Some patients require continuous inotropic infusions to support their heart function while others require mechanical support such as ventricular assist devices (VADs). As a unit dedicated to inter-professional collaboration and education, we strive to provide care to our patients and families while on the continuum of their inpatient stay within the Cardiac Center. This is a part-time, rotating shift position. The Clinical Nurse practices at the level of an advanced beginner to expert practitioner of professional nursing in accordance with, and guided by the CHOP Nursing Professional Practice Model. The nurse at this level demonstrates competence in caring for patients and families and progresses to caring for those with the most complex problems/highest acuity in the designated clinical area. Provides age/developmentally appropriate care. Care is delivered through RN leadership for patient care within the framework of family-centered care. Scheduling requirements for this position are: Full-time nurses rotate in the IR department, five, 8-hour shifts per week, scheduling times rotate 7:30-4pm, 8am-4:30pm, and 8:30am-5pm. Call requirements begin at 5pm and requires 24 hour coverage including weekends and holidays. Assesses, implements, and evaluates care needed by assigned patients under the direction of the licensed physician. The RN is knowledgeable about principles, theories, current methods and techniques of nursing practice. Using the nursing process, the RN collaborates with the patient, patient's family member(s)/significant others, professional peers and other members of the health care team to individualize patient care. Directs nursing support staff in the provision of patient care according to the standards of nursing practice, administrative and departmental policies and procedures.
