Patients are admitted directly from the ED, the Ross Trauma Admitting Area, or the operating room. Patients usually cared for in this area include those with traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, rib fractures, and lung injuries, as well as diverse orthopedic injuries requiring frequent monitoring and care. Many patients cared for in the TSICU are poly-trauma patients, with injuries involving more than one body system. Common surgical patients include those undergoing Whipple procedures, esophagectomies, gastrostomies, and abdominal aortic aneurysms. The unit is staffed with registered nurses, critical care technicians, trauma surgery nurse practitioners, resident physicians, and attending trauma surgeons. Staff also work closely with respiratory therapists and specialized surgical groups such as orthopedics and neurosurgery. Nurses and critical care technicians working in this area receive education specific to the trauma patient's care. Cardiovascular disorders cared for on 3 South include: MI-following the acute stay in the HVICU, Heart Failure; Pulmonary Edema; Arrhythmias; Post-interventional Radiology patients; Post-procedure Angioplasty; Valvular Heart Disease. The staff cares for Thoracic Surgery patients undergoing various thoracic surgical procedures such as lobectomy, esophagectomy, sleeve resection/chest wall resection, VATS, lung volume reduction surgery and endobronchial valves. In addition, the staff cares for Pulmonary Hypertension (PH) and Heart Failure (HF) patients, utilizing hemodynamic monitoring tools to diagnose and treat the most severe forms of both diseases including patients with Left Ventricular Assist Devices.
