Job Summary and Qualifications Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, the Scrub Technician is responsible for providing surgical scrub assistance for all types of minor and major surgical and non-surgical procedures dependent on individual experience. The Lead Technologist is responsible for training and mentoring other staff. Responsibilities: · Performs the duties and responsibilities of preceptor and clinical resource to Surgical Tech staff in order to provide optimal patient care. · Participates in the selection, training, education, and development of the Surgical Tech team. · Responsible for consistently demonstrating knowledge of instrument sets and proficient in the knowledge of surgical supplies. · Works closely with Sterile Processing and makes recommendations on instrument sets, supplies, and equipment. · Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, sets up and maintains a sterile field for all surgical/non-surgical procedures applying principles of asepsis and other appropriate guidelines. · Gains, maintains, and applies knowledge of specialized instruments, equipment, and supplies used in surgery. · Organizes instruments, equipment, and supplies for easy access and maximum efficiency. · Provides call rotation coverage for scrub duties. · Applies safety procedures and principles in all actions. · Applies basic knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and principles of growth and development as required to assist in surgical procedures. · Assists with transport of patients. Supplies, equipment, to and from surgical suites in a timely manner as indicated. · Ensures minimal delays in surgical schedule as a result of transport, room turnover, or equipment management. · Uses patient transfer devices applying appropriate safety principles. · Assists in patient transfer to and from bed and transport devices using effective body mechanics and patient safety assistive devices: roller boards, slide board, gait belt, lift sheet. · Adapts performance of routine scrub duties, communication techniques to the patient’s age, culture and general condition. · Manages medical equipment, drains, and electronic devices according to hospital procedure: urinary drainage devices, surgical drains, chest drainage pump/device, monitors, IV pumps, braces, etc. · Properly labels medications on the back table in surgery · Adheres to policies and AORN standards during surgical procedures and when transporting instrumentation. · Provides proper counting technique before, during, after and at relief during shift or lunch change. · Applies universal precautions according to potential exposure routes. · Demonstrates effective handwashing, and surgical scrub, performed at task appropriate intervals. · Uses hospital approved cleaning solutions, chemicals, and procedures effectively and according to manufacturers’ recommendations for safety. · Uses appropriate instrument transport, decontamination, disinfection, and sterilization techniques in the maintenance of equipment, instruments and supplies. · Monitors for breaks in sterile technique during surgical procedures and responds according to AORN standards · Reports contaminated trays to OR Supervisor for resolution · Maintains records when using the IUSS in sub-sterile room. · Maintains log books as required; aids RN in documentation of breaks in sterile technique · Uses Meditech automation system to print next day’s schedule to pull cases, to print Dr.’s preference cards and to view interdepartmental and hospital-wide communications. · Coordinates own schedule and priorities with O.R. Supervisor, other department staff and physicians. · Maintains awareness of own limitations, seeks guidance from appropriate coworkers. Does not accept inappropriate delegated assignments. · Alert for errors in own or others’ work, participates in corrective actions.
