Responsibilities* 6C Medicine Pulmonary Unit 6C is a 32-bed unit that provides 24-hour nursing care to adult patients. 6C is the home floor for Internal Medicine. Total patient care is utilized as 6Cs nursing care delivery system. Within this system, RNs assume the role of Patient Care Coordinator responsible for planning patient care from admission to discharge. Types of patients treated on 6C include pulmonary patients present with compromise of the cardiopulmonary system. Many of the patient population on 6C are transferred to this unit from the adjacent Critical Care Medicine Unit. These patients can often be a challenge to your nursing skills in the areas of assessment and clinical intervention. Medicine patients are typically admitted with problems such as asthma, Wegners granuloma, COPD, pleural effusion, pulmonary embolus, pneumothorax, pneumonia, sarcoidosis and cystic fibrosis. Internal medicine patients are admitted with a variety of diseases. Our patient ages range from adults to the elderly. Job Summary The IPOP model provides coordinated cell and gene therapy care in an ambulatory setting enabling patients to receive intensive treatment while minimizing inpatient stays. Patients are evaluated and treated during the day by a specialized multidisciplinary team (Physician, APPs, Pharmacist, Nursing). The team ensures administration of therapies, completion of clinical assessments, and coordination of supportive care services. Nursing staff play a critical role in patient education, symptom triage, and ongoing assessment to ensure early identification of complications. At the end of each treatment day, patients return home or to nearby housing, where they are supported through remote monitoring, structured symptom management, and scheduled clinical follow-up. If a patient?s condition worsens after hours, they can present directly to the Oncology Treatment and Evaluation Center (OTEC) for urgent evaluation and supportive oncology care, bypassing the emergency department. Once stabilized, patients transition back to the IPOP model, ensuring continuity of care while reducing unnecessary inpatient admissions. Responsibilities* The IPOP Registered Nurse is accountable for the delivery of direct patient care, including patient education and the management of patients undergoing cell and gene therapy. Coordination of hospital admissions from IPOP The Registered Nurse (RN) supports professional nursing practice across practice settings and across the continuum of care to meet the needs of the patient and family; assesses the needs of the patient undergoing infusion treatment; plans, implements, and evaluates patient care; and teaches patients, families, orients colleagues and peers. The RN administers cell and gene therapy, IV hydration, blood products, chemotherapy, biotherapy and immunotherapy. They are also responsible for managing the daily needs throughout the patient's admission to the IPOP unit. High acuity symptom monitoring for CRS, neurotoxicity, infection, dehydration, and infusion reactions Support investigational and research-based cellular therapy protocols including protocol-specific monitoring, specimen collection, investigational product administration, toxicity assessment support, and required documentation/compliance activities. Coordinate research-related clinical activities including study-specific education, protocol implementation support, investigational infusion workflows, and collaboration with research, regulatory, and clinical trial teams. Support for FACT accreditation and regulatory compliance. Provide clinical assessment, mentoring, coaching and evaluation of staff. Management Of Clinical Area Participate in the development and implementation of unit or area goals and objectives. Identify and plan for staffing consistent with the needs of the patient population and budgetary requirements. Participate in planning and problem solving of daily unit/area operations, priorities of patient services, and urgent and emergent care. Interpret and implement the Hospital and University policies and procedures and the standards of regulatory agencies. Participate in the monitoring of department payroll and commodity expenditures. Provide input into the payroll and commodity budget planning process. Coordinate performance evaluation activities for unit staff as delegated by the Clinical Nursing Director. Participate in hiring activities of unit staff, conducting personnel interviews and reference checks. Collaborate with Clinical Nursing Director, Educational Coordinator and Clinical Nurse Specialist to implement competency based educational programming and evaluation. Anticipate and respond to patient/family issues and concerns. Quality Assurance And Research Participate in planning, coordinating and evaluating unit quality improvement activities. Promote the integration of research findings into clinical practice by unit nursing staff. Promote staff involvement in clinical research, as applicable. Required Qualifications* Required Educational Requirements Applicant must meet one of the following: Bachelors of Science in Nursing OR Associates degree or diploma in Nursing and a Masters degree in Nursing. Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan. Minimum five (5) years RN experience. Minimum two (2) years recent (within the last 5 years) RN experience in a critical care setting. Completion of a Nurse Leadership certification within two (2) years of accepting this position or when eligible to certify, whichever comes first. Certification is expected to be maintained while in this leadership role. Examples include Certified Nurse Manager and Leader (CNML) or, Nurse Executive (NE-BC). Certifications must be recognized by the Magnet Recognition Program and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Evidence of demonstrated or potential leadership ability including charge nurse, team leader, advancement in professional development framework, or other management/leadership experience.
