Job Summary As supervised and delegated by a Registered Nurse, provides direct patient care in the clinical setting. Decisions made reflect knowledge of facts, knowledge of diseases/surgical conditions, care required and good judgment. Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over patient life span and the skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care to the patient population served. Able to interpret data about the patient’s status in order to identify each patient’s age specific needs and provide care needed by the patient group. Apply principles of sterile techniques and infection control procedures. Follows the six (6) medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors. Maintains current knowledge of medications and IV fluids and their correct administration based on age of the patient and his/her clinical condition. Assists with establishment of plan of care which is appropriate to problems identified and involves the patient according to his or her capabilities and desires. Identifies and documents goals, anticipated progress and plans for reevaluation. Assists other nursing staff with the delivery of nursing care. Consults other providers as appropriate to collaborate in patient care and performance improvement activities. Coordinate patient services with referring physician / facility. Performs other reasonably related job duties as assigned or requested, within scope of practice. Demonstrates a competent level of approved skilled nursing care tasks and procedures using approved technical skills related to vital signs, pulse oximetry, venipuncture, starting standard peripheral IVs only (not midlines or long peripheral lines), urinary catheter insertion/catheter care; and simple dressings, remove/discontinue a peripheral line. Administer IV fluids, provided completion of annual competency IV therapy training. Monitors patients receiving blood and blood products and TPN under the direction of the RN, who administers the transfusion. Makes recommendations in the application of the nursing process.
