Organization: VUH 10S Elective Surgery Unit - A Job Summary: Applies the nursing process to plan and implement the care of patients, including patient and family education and continuum of care planning. Effectively communicates pertinent patient/family information to the health care team. Collaborates in establishing patient goals and evaluates progress to ensure effective outcomes. Furthers professional growth by engaging in learning activities according to the Board of Nursing standards. . SHIFT The PRN requirement is 3 shifts in a six-week scheduling period. All 3 shifts will be on the night shift, 7p - 7am. POSITION HIGHLIGHTS Fast-Paced, Specialized Post-Surgical Care on a BRAND NEW unit opening 6/25/26! This dynamic 17-bed unit with a nurse to patient ratio of 1:5-6 that cares for adult patients ages 18 to 100 who are admitted for planned, elective surgical procedures across multiple specialties—including general surgery, orthopedics, hernia, foregut and bariatric surgeries. Our patients are unique because they typically arrive with a clear surgical plan and a recovery pathway focused on rapid mobilization, pain management, and discharge readiness. Length of stay is generally 24 hours to 2–3 days , which creates a predictable, structured workflow for nurses and providers. Please note this is an *Inpatient* unit and not a surgery center opportunity. Why 10S? The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Nursing is seeking a Psychiatric Nursing Assistant to perform specific tasks to assist members of the Nursing team in providing patient care under the direct supervision of Registered Nurses. Responsibilities Will Include, But Are Not Limited To Establish therapeutic relationships with patients, families and multi disciplinary team. Participates in planning patient care appropriate for patient's condition and age. Documents patient behavior in a factual, legible manner and identifies material to report to the registered nurse. Maintains patients’ safety and security by providing physical care and assistance; follows Standard precaution. Provides supervision of patients during activities. Identifies potential crisis situations, reports to the registered nurse, and intervenes. Perform patient personal hygiene such as bathing, toileting, feeding, dressing, grooming and oral care for patients. Take temperature, pulse and blood pressure. Clean equipment, patient bedside area and nursing unit. Set up rooms for patient admission. Transport patients by bed, cart or wheelchair. Transport equipment, specimens and supplies. Stock and supply patient rooms and Nursing unit. Perform basic CPR as required. Maintain patient confidentiality. This unit patient population includes dementia, depression, anxiety, Parkinson’s, and Huntington’s. Services provided include medication management, assistance with daily activities, occupational therapy, recreational therapy, and electroconvulsive therapy. Percent of Time: 50% Schedule: Rotating days of the week. Rotating shifts. Every other weekend.
