It is a fast-paced environment where state-of-the-art technology, nationally recognized standards of care and critical thinking skills are utilized by the all-RN staff to provide compassionate patient and family-centered care. Staff on this unit are highly proficient in pre-operative and intra-operative support as well as immediate post-operative phases of cardiovascular procedures. This includes open heart surgery, ventricular assist device implantation, and various interventional procedures including transcatheter aortic valve replacement. Acute cardiology and heart failure patients also receive care in CVICU, along with overflow medical and surgical intensive care patients. MICU : The Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU)/7 West is a 20-bed intensive care unit. This unit provides holistic and compassionate care for patients with numerous diagnoses including pneumonia, GI bleed, respiratory failure, sepsis, heart failure, MI, post-cardiac arrest, acute renal failure, multi-system organ failure and many others. Nurses utilize a variety of equipment including intra-aortic balloon pumps and continuous dialysis machines. The MICU is a closed unit with an intensivist physician serving as the attending for each patient. The Christ Hospital is a teaching facility which allows the staff to work closely with the medical residents in the MICU and provides an opportunity for new nurses to receive specialized training in the Critical Care Nurse Residency Program. The MICU and SICU share primary responsibility for the Rapid Response Team (the STAT Team) and respond to calls throughout the hospital. The MICU RNs strive to utilize technology and evidence-based practice to provide compassionate and efficient care to achieve best possible outcomes for patients. SICU : The Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) is a 12-bed unit. This unit serves adult and, occasionally, adolescent patients. Diagnostic categories include neurology, neurosurgery, general surgery, vascular surgery, thoracic surgery, internal medicine, respiratory disease and OB/Gyn surgery. Many patients are admitted to the SICU directly from the operating room for their initial recovery period, including those undergoing kidney transplants. These patients receive care in the SICU immediately post-op and remain on the unit for the first few days following the transplant. Any patients requiring intraventricular/intracerebral monitoring are cared for in SICU. All SICU nurses become NIH Stroke Scale Certified within their first year on the unit. The 7Q Neurosurgical ICU at TriHealth Good Samaritan Hospital is a specialized 20-bed unit focused on providing intensive care for patients with complex neurological conditions. The unit cares for individuals with aneurysms, brain tumors, spinal injuries, abscesses, arteriovenous malformations, and traumatic brain injuries, as well as patients participating in various research protocols. The multidisciplinary team on 7Q is dedicated to delivering specialized care for these critically ill patients, using advanced monitoring techniques and individualized treatment plans. The orientation process for nurses joining 7Q includes comprehensive training to develop the specialized skills necessary for neurosurgical critical care. This includes EKG and ACLS training, as well as critical care classes, followed by a six-week competency-based orientation (CBO) preceptorship. Prior experience in neuro or critical care is preferred for those joining the 7Q ICU, and a minimum of one year of current medical/surgical or telemetry experience is recommended. However, new graduates may also be considered, particularly for the Neuro Stepdown unit, where they can gain foundational experience before transitioning to the ICU.
