ESSENTIAL PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES The Registered Nurse, School Health shall carry out the performance responsibilities listed below. Supervise staff as assigned in the performance of job duties. Apply appropriate nursing theory as the basis for decision making in the school setting: a. Demonstrate knowledge of nursing theory by sharing information with peers, students, family, staff, other professionals and the community to promote health and wellness. b. Demonstrate application of nursing theory through use of the most recent techniques and information, which govern actions. Establish and maintain a comprehensive school/health program following the guidelines of the Florida Department of Professional Regulation, Board of Nursing and School Board Policies. a. Consult with school administration to establish, review, and revise procedures for a comprehensive school health program which is in compliance with federal, state and local statutes and regulations. b. Assist in training, supervising, and evaluating paraprofessionals. Determine extent of orientation, t and type of supervision needed to comply with the Nurse Practice Act, and other legal considerations. c. Assume responsibility for in-service programs for school personnel regarding health-related issues. d. Establish process to identify students at-risk for physical and psychosocial problems. e. Communicate student health needs to other school personnel. f. Establish follow up mechanism for referral of identified students. g. Complete written reports to provide continuity and accountability of the program. Develop individualized health plans for students using nursing process. a. Collect information about the health and developmental status of the student in a systematic and continuous manner, including health and social histories; screening results; physical assessment; emotional status; performance level and health goals. b. Collect data from student, family, school, personnel and health care professionals. c. Use data collected about the health and educational status of the student to determine a nursing diagnosis. 1. coordinate efforts with other providers and school personnel to decrease duplication of care. 2. identify relationship between health status and the student's ability to learn. d. Develop a nursing care plan with specific goals and interventions, delineating school nursing actions unique to student needs. e. Intervene as guided by the nursing care plan to implement nursing actions that promote, maintain, or restore health, prevent illness, and affect rehabilitation. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE An earned associate's degree from an accredited institution in Nursing. A minimum of two (2) years clinical nursing experience in med-surg, pediatrics or a similar nursing specialty. Licensed as a Registered Nurse by the Florida State Board of Nursing. License must be in good standing. Valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) or Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, updated according to the American Heart or American Red Cross Association Standards. Successful completion of job-related test requirements, as follows: a. Medication 85% b. Universal Precautions 100% Access to reliable transportation. Computer skills as required for the position. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE An earned bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Nursing. Bilingual skills. SIGNIFICANT CONTACTS-frequency, contact, purpose Works with school staff, students, principals, parents, and health care providers to ensure coordination of health care for students with chronic health conditions. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force as frequently as needed to move objects TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the District's approved compensation plan. Duties include determining severity of illness/injury, calling 911 if necessary, monitoring chronically ill students, monitoring the exposure of others to diseases and contagious illnesses, disposing properly of body fluids, and performing technical procedures as necessary (e.g., blood glucose testing, injectable medication, diapering, and/or maintain feeding tubes.) Collect and maintain health information on students to include: computer data entry, cumulative records, patient charts, immunization law compliance, exclusion/suspension and completion of district and state reports. Prepare and maintain student health files, including all health records, documents and reports. This includes documents to inform teachers/specialists of children with special health needs. Complete staffing health information forms on Special Education staffing. Communicate with District RN(s) and school staff to implement student health care plans. Administer medications and other medical treatments required by students in accordance with physician orders and district and state policy; record into daily medication logs. Notify parents/caregivers when medications are running low and ensure paperwork is properly maintained in file for students receiving medications. Contact parents/caregivers of ill or injured children, document all head injuries, file necessary accident reports in accordance with established health office procedures and prepare student to go home if necessary. Compile and submit student injury reports to District Nurse and appropriate administrative personnel. Serve as worker's compensation representative to assess and assist injured personnel with treatment options. Perform clerical and secretarial duties as necessary, including answering phones, typing, copying, and preparing/mailing outgoing health correspondence. Provide students and parents with options for treatment and/or community resources by serving as a liaison to outside agencies and programs. Organize, schedule and implement health screening programs to include: vision, hearing, dental, etc. Record, track results, make recommendations for follow-up care for students who did not pass initial testing. Notify building administrator, teachers, transportation and kitchen staff of students with significant health concerns. Attend staffing/child study meetings as needed. Research as needed regarding medications and conditions. Report suspected abuse or neglect to Administrator and proper authorities. Assist in facilitating activities that promote healthy lifestyles for school and community (blood drives, immunization clinics, cholesterol screenings, dental clinics, etc.) Assist in control of nuisance diseases per instruction of District Nurse and state health department. Report infectious diseases to District Nurse and state health department as per CDPHE guidelines. Maintain a clean and orderly health office, including inventorying and ordering supplies. Assist with maintenance of the MSDS book for the building. Engage in ongoing professional development. Perform other duties as assigned. EDUCATION AND TRAINING: High school diploma or equivalent. Training as one of the following desired: LPN, Emergency Medical Technician, Medical Assistant or Certified Nursing Assistant. EXPERIENCE: 0-2 years' experience in related field. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, & REGISTRATIONS: CPR and First Aid required. Criminal Background Check required for hire.
