Overview Performs a variety of roles to assist in the care of patients in the operating room in accordance with established policies and protocols for surgical technologists. Strong ortopedic experence preferred. Responsibilities Contributes to a safe, effective environment for the surgical patient. Contributes to a culture of safety. Applies and enforces principles of aseptic technique. Checks all equipment to be used on sterile field and reports or corrects unsafe conditions prior to placing on the sterile field. Verifies exposure to sterilization process and integrity of sterile packaging. Demonstrates ability to operate sterilizers and all equipment used in operating room. Assists surgeon and first assistant by passing surgical instruments, supplies, and sponges. Assists as needed when no assistant is available. Initiates sponge, instrument, and sharp counts at the appropriate time. Maintains awareness of location of all countable items throughout the procedure in order to maintain a correct count. Assists with the adequate preparation of the operating room for surgery. Communicates with circulating nurse concerning proper preparation and disposition of specimens. Aides nurses with duties related to the care of the patient while in the operating room. Organizes and inspects surgical instrumentation. Checks for cleanliness, damage, and function. Reports any damaged instruments to sterile processing for repair or replacement and replaces on the field as needed. Pulls disposable supplies for scheduled surgical cases according to the preference cards 3 business days in advance in order to ensure any missing supplies can be obtained in time for the case. Communicates missing supplies to surgical purchaser. Creates and updates surgeons preference cards as needed. Fills in for sterile processing staff when they are unavailable. Decontaminates & inspects instruments. Able to run the washer decontaminator, ultrasonic cleaner, sterilizers, and scope cleaning equipment according to policies and procedures. Participates in continuing education to improve skills and abilities and stay abreast of current technologies. Qualifications Education : Completion of Surgical Technician program required. Certification preferred. Experience : Minimum of 1 year related experience or equivalent. Licenses & Certifications : BLS; Surgical Technician Certification preferred. Required Skills & Knowledge : Excellent written and verbal communication skills, must have the ability to read and comprehend written instructions to interpret medical orders and medical records. Able to utilize deductive reasoning, common sense and critical thinking to problem solve and demonstrate the ability to make independent, appropriate judgments based upon evidence based practice. Compensation Actual compensation takes into account several factors including but not limited to a candidate’s experience, education, skills, licensure and certifications, department equity, training and organizational needs. Assist in positioning of patients for procedures, ensuring the patient has been correctly prepared for surgery. The Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) offers advanced outpatient surgery, allowing patients to return home soon after their procedure without the need for overnight stays. Surgical Technologists, sometimes called “scrub techs”, assist in surgical procedures under the supervision of surgeons and Registered Nurses. They help to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and maintain a sterile field. Surgical Technologists perform a variety of functions, such as checking supplies and equipment, setting up sterile tables, performing appropriate counts, draping the sterile field, passing instruments to the surgeon and assistant during the procedure, preparing sterile dressing and cleaning instruments for terminal sterilization. This is a great hands-on learning opportunity that will allow you to enhance your skills each and every day. This is a regular PRN position, with caregivers working days between 7:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. with extended hours on the weekend. A caregiver who excels in this role will: Perform scrub functions and assist in circulating functions under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN). Set up the sterile table and ensure appropriate supplies, drugs and equipment are available. Assist RN in counting all sponges, instruments, etc. at appropriate times during surgery. Assist in gowning and gloving surgical team members and draping patients. Ensure aseptic condition is maintained by the scrubbed surgical team through the procedure. Participate in the intraoperative “timeout.” Collect, identify and label specimens removed during surgical procedures and gives specimens to circulator for disposition. Coordinate surgical and clinical schedules. Assist with outpatient clinic flow. Provide information to patients and family. Assist with coordinating outpatient procedure room cases and supplies. Assist with orientation of new hires. Work on unit committees. Assist with marketing and practice development. Coordinate studies for sections. Answer patient phone calls, gather information and relay to provider. Perform post-op phone calls and relay information to provider. Provide information back to patient based on provider instruction. Scribe for provider in outpatient clinic. Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: Graduate of a Surgical Technology program accredited through the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program (CAAHEP) or Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) OR completion of a military surgical technology program OR certification as a Surgical Technologist (acceptable certifications for this route are TS-C through the National Center for Competency Training or CST through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting) Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: Certified Surgical Technologist Physical Requirements: Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.
