PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 1. *Commits to the mission, vision, beliefs and consistently demonstrates our core values. 2. *Initiates assessment and reassessment based on the patient’s presenting problems/needs in accordance with Bryan Medical Center’s procedures. 3. *Synthesizes pertinent initial and ongoing patient data to identify nursing priorities for care and desired outcomes/goals. 4. *Integrates appropriate standards of care into the patient’s plan of care based on the diagnosis and patient-specific needs. 5. *Executes therapeutic and/or supportive interventions. 6. *Provides education for the patient and family to meet identified patient needs according to their needs, abilities, preferences and readiness to learn. 7. *Evaluates the patient’s response to and effectiveness of interventions. 8. *Evaluates patient’s progress toward established outcomes. 9. *Incorporates cultural considerations into the plan/delivery of care. 10. *Includes family, significant other, or identified support person in the care of the patient as appropriate. 11. *Documents patient care and related information according to Bryan Medical Center procedures for documentation. 12. *Provides care in collaboration with other members of the interdisciplinary team. 13. *Facilitates patient’s transition to the next level of care. 14. Assumes responsibility in a shared or delegated assignment and supports team member’s practices through timely communication. 15. Serves as a role model to colleagues, students and other care providers. 16. *Actively participates in continued learning opportunities and continued self-development pertinent to the work unit and duties of the job. 17. Integrates evidence based research findings into practice in accordance with policy and procedure. 18. Engages in department specific and organizational performance improvement initiatives. 19. Appropriately utilizes all safety equipment when indicated and as defined by organizational procedure (i.e. lifting equipment, PPE, sharps, etc.). 20. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise. 21. Participates in meetings, committees and department projects as assigned. 22. Performs other related projects and duties as assigned. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 1. Maintains clinical competency as required for the unit of assignment including but not limited to population-specific competencies and participates in annual skill competency verification. 2. Knowledge of federal and state regulations related to nursing applications and relative practice area. 3. Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and software applications relevant to work functions. 4. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. 5. Ability to delegate, provide instruction and evaluate the work of LPN’s and unlicensed professional 6. Ability to maintain confidentiality of patient information. 7. Ability to exercise professional judgment, courtesy and tact in daily interactions with others. 8. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with health care team members and diverse patient populations. 9. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment relevant to changing patient needs, including work with patients with acute, chronic, and complex disease processes, and those who are dying. 10. Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Current Registered Nurse licensure from the State of Nebraska or approved compact state of residence as defined by the Nebraska Nurse Practice Act. Must provide evidence of certification and/or instruction for practice area as required by State or Federal standards/regulations. OTHER CREDENTIALS / CERTIFICATIONS: Basic Life Support (CPR) certification required. SUMMARY Coordinates total nursing care for patients using nursing standards and the nursing process; perform professional nursing care, resolve patient care problems and interact with patients, families, ICU staff, and other departments as warranted. Main function will be dedicated to the daily running of the patient flow in the ICU: creating daily assignments, directing workflow, and mentoring staff. JOB DUTIES To work collaboratively with the Director of ICU/Telemetry and the Chief Nursing Executive. To support the staff clinically and to develop quality processes. Perform as the charge nurse up to 16 hours per week. Flexible hours are preferred to facilitate time with off shifts. Serve as a mentor/educator to staff. Assists with interviews, new hires, orientation, pink sheets, schedules, multi-rater for evaluations, monthly staff meetings, counsels, and recommends termination of assigned staff with the assistance of the Director of ICU/Telemetry and Human Resources as reflected by staffing patterns, schedules, anecdotal, and disciplinary records. Assures that the medical orders and patient’s plan of care is carried out promptly and efficiently. Act on identified problems and/or situations and provide feedback with appropriate documentation. Promotes an environment in which the patient care team can work cooperatively toward objectives. Performs or delegates completion of monthly Quality Audits on the following: restraints, conscious sedation, transfers, Restraints > 72 hours summary log, Vent Bundle, M&M, Maintains Midline placement log and random chart audits. Provide written documentation of staff education following quality audits when deficits occur. Provides oversight of departmental policies to delegated staff nurse. BSN or MS is preferred. A minimum of three years ICU experience and Charge Nurse experience necessary. Previous management experience preferred. Current PA License and BLS/PALS/ACLS/Trauma/CPI/critical Care course. Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment. Must be able to work in a dynamic and rapidly changing environment and take appropriate actions. Must obtain NIH stroke certification prior to the completion of orientation in the position. Thereafter, must maintain NIH stroke certification, annually. Additional stroke education is required. Refer to Administrative Policy A-148 for specific stroke education requirements. Department/Unit: ICU-Surgical And Neuroscience - B2 Work Shift: Day (United States of America) Salary Range: $88,192.00 - $136,697.60 The Surgical and Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit (SICU and Neuro ICU) has a combined total of 30 intensive care beds designed to provide specialized care to the critically ill adult (14 and older) patient. The unit has a usual 50/50 split of patient population between the neuro and surgical patient population. The focus of care is includes patients with life-threatening conditions related to major elective and emergency surgical procedures, multi-trauma, traumatic brain injury, spinal injury, stroke, seizure, sepsis/multi-organ system failure, hemodynamic instability and failure to wean. The SICU and Neuro ICU patient needs encompass but are not limited to comprehensive physical assessments, intensive monitoring, treatment of laboratory values, ventilator management and hemodynamic monitoring. SICU-Neuro ICU nurses require the following skill set – ICP monitoring via EVD or bolt, spinal drains/catheters, brain oxygen monitoring, Artic Sun therapy, continuous EEG, intra-arterial catheter, non-invasive cardiac output, mechanical ventilation, continuous renal replacement therapy, reconstructive flap monitoring, and massive blood transfusion among others.
