Performs Other duties as required. Overview The Trauma Step-Down Unit (TSDU) is a 9-bed intermediate critical care unit specializing in the care of trauma tically injured patients. Patients with serious but less critical injuries can be admitted to the TSDU directly from the ED or the Ross Trauma Admitting Area. Patients usually cared for in this area include those with trauma tic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, rib fractures and lung injuries, as well as diverse orthopedic injuries requiring frequent monitoring and care. Patients may also be transferred to the TSDU from the Trauma /Surgical ICU when their clinical condition has improved but close monitoring or ventilator support is still required . The unit is staffed with registered nurses, critical care technicians, trauma surgery nurse practitioners and resident physicians. Staff also work closely with respiratory therapy and specialized surgical groups such as orthopedics and neurosurgery. Nurses and critical care technicians working in this area receive education specific to the care of the trauma patient. Experience Required A minimum of one year or more of RN acute care experience in an inpatient setting is preferred Education Requirements Graduate of NLN accredited School of Nursing. License/Certification Requirements Current NJ-RN License (Registered Nurse). Current NJ-BLS Certification (Basic Life Support) Certain specialties may require advanced certification (i.e., ACLS, NALS, PALS).

The unit focuses on performance improvement and evidenced based practice to provide the best possible care. MDs, RNs, unit secretaries, and ancillary staff work collaboratively to care for a wide variety of patient populations. Interdisciplinary rounds are performed twice daily. The complexity of these patients requires a patient ratio of 1:1 or 1:2. The MICU population may at any given time consist of a diverse range of morbidities including, medical patients diagnosed with respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation, multi-system organ failure/ sepsis, renal failure, gastrointestinal bleeding, pulmonary hypertension, and liver failure. Interventions, depending upon the disease process, may require continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), hemodynamic drips, and inhaled prostacycline. Nurses operate in collaboration with other staff as well as autonomously when as appropriate, evidenced by nurse driven insulin protocol for DKA patients. Patients usually cared for in this area include those with traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, rib fractures and lung injuries, as well as diverse orthopedic injuries requiring frequent monitoring and care. The unit is staffed with registered nurses, critical care technicians, trauma surgery nurse practitioners and resident physicians. Staff also work closely with respiratory therapy and specialized surgical groups such as orthopedics and neurosurgery. Nurses and critical care technicians working in this area receive education specific to the care of the trauma patient. Provides a complete physical assessment and history of current and previous illness(es). 2. Provides professional nursing care by utilizing all elements of nursing process. 3. Assesses and evaluates patient’s status by: A. Writing and initiating plan of care B. Regularly re-evaluating patient and family/caregiver needs C. Participating in revising the plan of care as necessary 4. Initiates the plan of care and makes necessary revisions as patient status and needs change. 5. Uses health assessment data to determine nursing diagnosis. 6. Develops a care plan that establishes goals, based on nursing diagnosis and incorporates palliative nursing actions. Includes the patient and the family in the planning process. 7. Initiates appropriate preventive and rehabilitative nursing procedures. Administers medications and treatments as prescribed by the physician in the physician’s plan of care. 8. Counsels the patient and family in meeting nursing and related needs. 9. Job Essentials: - Performs an assessment of the patient, leading to development, implementation and evaluation of a plan of care. - Administers, monitors and documents therapeutic interventions and regimes. - Effectively manages rapidly changing situations. - Participates in clinical decision-making. - Educates patient and family/responsible party regarding disease process, individual care needs, wellness, safety issues, etc. - Delegates and monitors care rendered by other members of nursing department and healthcare team. - Demonstrates standard precautions and patient safety principles in practice. - Participates in orientation, education and development of healthcare team. - Identifies and participates in the performance improvement activities. - Maintains professional and departmental level competencies. Educational Requirements, Qualifications: ICU experience preferred Must have valid NJ RN License. Approved licenses must be presented and maintained in accordance with the State of New Jersey licensing board. Refer to the Educational/Regulatory Requirement (Department Specific) policy in the Nursing Administrative Manual. Demonstrates knowledge of nursing skills, hospital practices, procedures and standards. Perfects skills and stays abreast of current nursing practice through on-going education, journals, etc. Must have strong communication skills. Must be able to coordinate efforts of a team of care providers. Hourly Rate: $46.31 - $64.17 The actual salary/rate will vary based on applicant’s experience as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.
