Physician Assistant or Acute Care Nurse Practitioner - Cardiac Recovery and Observation and Invasive Cardiac Post Anesthesia Care , Full-time, Days

Description Northwestern Medicine has an exciting opportunity for either an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or a Physician Assistant to work in our Cardiac Recovery and Observation (CROU) and Cardiac PACU department. The APP provides post-procedural recovery care for patients undergoing invasive and non-invasive cardiovascular procedures through the Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute. The unit supports patients' recovery from diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterization, electrophysiology procedures, structural heart interventions, and transesophageal echocardiogram requiring monitored recovery. The combined recovery areas include 17 monitored beds (11 CROU and 6 PACU) and care for approximately 8,000 cath and ep procedures annually. This position involves both inpatient and outpatient. Schedule: M-F, days (possible 4x10s - TBD); no nights/weekends/holidays/on-call Essential Functions : Demonstrates clinical expertise and expanded knowledge through patient care activities which may include diagnosis and management of a wide range of health problems. Responsible for health outcome of an assigned patient population. Confers with collaborating physician and other health professionals in area of clinical expertise. Develops appropriate educational systems for patients, families and staff in areas of expertise. Mentors graduate students in aspects of advanced practice and patient care. Actively participates in quality improvement and/or research pertinent to area of expertise. Responsibilities : Conducts comprehensive appraisals of patients' health status by taking health histories and performing physical examinations in clinical area. Provides direct clinical care to patients. Prescribes/orders medications, therapies; orders/interprets laboratory tests, x-rays and procedures according to clinical privileges. Evaluates patients to determine their need for further health care. Provides comprehensive teaching to patients and families. Documents in the medical record all care and education provided and/or procedures performed for which the Licensed Advanced Practice Provider is responsible. Refers to other disciplines as appropriate. Consultant to other disciplines in areas of expertise. Integrates research based knowledge and clinical expertise in decision making. Exemplifies a professional image in appearance, manner and presentation. Advocate for patients, families, coworkers, and the community. Maintains certifications and continuing education as required for licensure and privileging. Serves as a patient advocate and role model for 'Patients First'. Participates in unit/departmental/divisional or hospital committees/task forces as appropriate. Provides comprehensive teaching strategies for patients and their families. Develops and participates in programs to meet continuing education needs of staff. Serves as a role model and preceptor to students. Qualifications Required : Master’s degree from an accredited school/college of nursing OR master's degree from an accredited Physician Assistant Program Acute care certification required for APRNs Current license as a Registered Nurse in the State of Illinois. Document the following in the EMR for all assigned residents: a) vital signs b) weight c) meal monitoring d) bowl and bladder e) restorative records Detect and report situations that have a high probability of causing accidents or injuries to residents and/or staff. Assure that work/assignment areas are clean and free of hazardous conditions, i.e. spills, excess carts, etc. and that equipment, tools, supplies, etc. are properly stored while working, as well as before leaving such areas for breaks, meal times, and end of the work day. Assure that established infection control and universal precaution practices are maintained when performing nursing procedures. Follow established safety precautions when performing tasks and when using equipment and supplies. Assure that equipment is cleaned and prepared for the next shift. Assure that work schedules are followed. Maintain the confidentiality of resident information and honor his/her personal and property rights. Attend nursing department, Care Plan, and other meetings as directed by the DON or ADON. Attend and participate in in-service educational classes and on-the-job training programs as scheduled or as directed. Turn in Days Off and payroll special request forms in a timely manner. Follow established fire, disaster, safety, infection control, and evacuation policies and procedures. Perform other related duties as directed by the DON, ADON, charge nurse, or the Administrator.
