Under direction, provides direct nursing care to patients utilizing the nursing process, performs technical nursing functions and upholds the standard of practice of a professional nurse in caring for infant through geriatric patients. Essential Duties & Responsibilities: Utilizes the nursing process as the basis for nursing care. Provides direct patient care. Performs nursing functions, applying professional skills. Documents and maintains date on patient’s record. Maintains a safe environment. Applies basic teaching / learning concepts to patient education. Provides for life support. Acts as a patient advocate. Cooperates as a member of the nursing unit, department and overall hospital team. Participates in performance improvement. Delegates and / or supervises aspects of care to team members and reviews completion. Performs related work as required. Communicates pertinent data to appropriate parties. Maintains patient confidentiality. Conducts himself/herself effectively in stressful situations. Approaches situations with distressed patients, families, and visitors in a calm, professional manner. Collaborates with physicians and nurses to devise individualized care plans for patients. Properly assesses and manages patient populations with appropriate intervention. Administers intravenous medications and / or parenteral nutrition. Administers blood products and evaluates patient response. Education : Associate's degree in nursing required. Bachelor's degree in nursing preferred. License/Certification: Louisiana State Board RN license & CPR required. ACLS and PALS preferred. Additional Experience Preferred Current knowledge of clinical practice. Ability to operate and handle many kinds of complex equipment. Ability to demonstrate clinical competence and maintain current knowledge in caring for adolescent through geriatric patients. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Knowledge of theory, principles, techniques, and practice of professional nursing; of scientific principles and nursing research; of preparation, administration, and actions of medications; of treatments and medical procedures; of counseling and teaching techniques; of medical equipment as it relates to patient care. PURPOSE AND SCOPE: Works with the Facility Manager, facility staff and physician to coordinate the facility operations and patient procedures to ensure provision of quality patient care on a daily basis in accordance with organization policies, procedures and training. Ensures patient's procedures are scheduled in a timely manner and the facility capacity is utilized efficiently. As needed, assist with patient workflow, including providing direct patient care and monitoring pre, intra and post procedure. Oversees and ensures accurate and complete documentation of patient treatments from admission to discharge. Confirms written orders, consents and lab work are completed and documented in accordance with facility policies. This includes appropriate preparation of lab requisitions, delivery to appropriate labs, reporting and forwarding of lab results to appropriate physician. Assumes primary responsibility in an emergency situation and must maintain competency with all emergencies operational procedures, and initiate CPR and emergency measures as needed. Administers medications and IV conscious sedation to patients as directed per physician's orders, and in compliance with company, federal, state and local regulations. Attends and participates in Governing Body and CQI meetings with physicians, assisting with meeting agenda and gathering of data/material for meetings and reporting on assigned topics. Ensures appropriate operation of facility equipment and technology, including but not limited, patient monitors, defibrillators, medical recording devices and computers. Maintains a clean, safe and sanitary environment in the entire vascular access facility at all times through regular inspection of facility equipment and operation systems, reporting any malfunctions or maintenance issues. Ensures all blood spills are immediately addressed according to the organization Bloodborne Pathogen Control Policies. Participates in cost control initiatives. Responsible for efficient utilization of medication, laboratory, inventory, supplies and equipment to achieve supply cost goals following all guidelines established in the organization formularies. Assists in the development and revision of any applicable policies and procedures for the facility as directed to ensure continuous process improvement. Initiates, documents and completes ongoing Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities including monthly reports and attend meetings as required. Manages medications, including ordering, receiving, and inventory control and checking for expired medications, including appropriate recording of controlled substances as required by law. Oversees maintenance of usage logs for all medications with appropriate documentation, as well as, records of drug disposal. Communicates with the pharmacist to assure medication accuracy, including appropriate recording of controlled substances as required by law. Participates in all facility regulatory and accreditation surveys and action plans to address any deficiencies identified. A Brief Overview The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is a 74 bed, blended acuity, multidisciplinary unit. The PICU serves critically ill children and their families who require the most advanced diagnostic and therapeutic services. These advanced technologies include, but are not limited to, a variety of high frequency ventilation devices, sophisticated neurological monitoring devices, Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO), Peritoneal Dialysis, and Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT). CHOP Critical Care Nurses work collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team to ensure the best outcomes using innovative technologies. The Critical Care areas are equipped to deliver therapies that are aimed toward improving survival, hastening recovery, minimizing disability, and relieving pain and suffering from critical illness and injury in a safe, humane, and respectful manner. Conditions that commonly cause critical illness and injury or require intensive care include respiratory failure, renal failure, severe infection, multi-system organ failure, trauma, extensive surgery or organ transplantation, congenital anomalies, and hematologic or immunological disorders. Critical Care nurses across the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit are active participants in innovative unit-based research as well as organizational research initiatives. There are three distinct units within the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). Unit populations are as follows: PICU South - 24 bed unit with a mixed medical and surgical population serving patients that require Intensive Care with a diagnosis within a variety of medical subspecialties including a specific subset of oncology receiving radioactive therapy. PICU Main - 26 bed unit with a mixed medical and surgical population serving patients that require Intensive Care with a diagnosis within a variety of medical subspecialties PICU West - 24 bed unit predominately focused on Neurocritical Care patients but also will care for all patients that would require pediatric intensive care. This is a full-time position; however, there may be opportunities for part-time based on unit needs at the time of application. Acute care experience (adult or pediatric) is strongly preferred. Applications to this requisition include all 3 PICU units. Candidates are hired to one primary unit and can be assigned a shift in another PICU unit based on the needs of the department.
