Overview The Short Stay Outpatient Unit (SSOU) is a fast paced environment where multidisciplinary services are provided for patients needing a vast variety of treatments. This unit’s normal hours of operation are Monday – Friday day shift, but coverage is also provided on weekend day shifts on an as needed basis. Treatments are provided to patients with a variety of needs and who are sent by physicians from numerous disciplines including but not limited to Primary Care, Hematology, Oncology, Rheumatology, Gastroenterology, and Obstetrics. The SSOU Registered Nurse (RN) will provide treatments to include but not limited to the administration of chemotherapies and biotherapies, blood products, ESAs, IV antibiotics, iron, and hydration. The SSOU RN routinely performs therapeutic phlebotomies, CVL care, and wound dressing changes. SSOU RNs are highly autonomous and work in a team nursing environment. All RNs are expected to become chemotherapy certified within a year of employment and to consider national certification if not already certified. The RN will utilize the nursing process in the provision of care and will practice within the scope of the Nurse Practice Act of the State of Arkansas and the policies, procedures and standards of the Health System. The RN will demonstrate a commitment to teamwork through effective collaboration efforts. Position Summary The Registered Nurse – Cardiac Cath Lab reports to the Assistant Director, Cardiac Cath Lab and provides specialized nursing care for patients undergoing diagnostic, interventional, and electrophysiology procedures. This position is responsible for pre-procedure assessment and preparation, intraprocedural monitoring and support, post-procedure recovery coordination, patient and family education, and accurate documentation in accordance with nursing standards, regulatory requirements, and departmental protocols. The RN collaborates closely with cardiologists, advanced practice providers, technologists, anesthesia and procedural support teams, and other members of the cardiovascular care team to promote safe, efficient, high-quality, patient-centered care. Essential Position Responsibilities Perform comprehensive nursing assessments for cardiac catheterization, interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, and related cardiovascular procedures, including review of history, medications, allergies, laboratory results, procedural risk factors, and readiness for sedation or intervention. Provide safe, evidence-based nursing care across the pre-procedure, intraprocedural, and post-procedure phases, including patient preparation, vascular access site assessment, medication administration, procedural monitoring, recovery care, and discharge readiness. Monitor hemodynamic status, cardiac rhythm, vital signs, level of consciousness, oxygenation, pain, and overall patient response during and after procedures; promptly identify changes in condition and communicate concerns to the procedural physician or appropriate provider. Assist with emergency response in the cardiac cath lab, including STEMI activations, arrhythmia management, procedural complications, rapid clinical deterioration, and other urgent cardiovascular events in alignment with ACLS standards and department protocols. Administer and monitor medications, anticoagulants, antiplatelet therapy, contrast-related interventions, moderate sedation support, reversal agents, and emergency medications within scope of practice and organizational policy. Maintain sterile technique and infection prevention standards while supporting procedural setup, patient positioning, room turnover, equipment readiness, and safe workflow in collaboration with cath lab technologists and procedural team members. Complete timely, accurate, and thorough documentation of assessments, interventions, medications, procedural events, patient response, education, handoff communication, and discharge instructions in the electronic medical record. Educate patients and families regarding procedure expectations, post-procedure care, access site precautions, activity restrictions, medications, follow-up instructions, and symptoms requiring medical attention. Help document findings and proposed corrective actions from root cause analysis reviews. Support tracking of corrective action follow-through to confirm identified issues are resolved. Patient Outreach – Care Gap Closure & Care Coordination Conduct patient outreach (phone, MyChart, or mail) to close identified care gaps and schedule needed services. Educate patients on the purpose and importance of recommended screenings, visits, or services tied to open care gaps. Identify and address barriers to care (transportation, scheduling conflicts, insurance, health literacy) and connect patients with appropriate team members for resource referral. Coordinate with referral sources, specialists, and community resources to support timely closure of care needs. Document all outreach attempts, outcomes, and follow-up actions accurately and timely in Epic. Episodic Care Management & Post-ED Outreach Identify patients with recent Emergency Department visits through ED notifications, Epic reports, or care team referrals. Conduct timely post-ED outreach to assess patient status, understanding of discharge/ED instructions, medication or follow-up needs, and risk for recurrent ED use. Coordinate scheduling of needed follow-up appointments with the PCP or appropriate specialist. Provide short-term episodic care coordination support for patients with acute or transitional needs outside the standard care gap workflow. Escalate urgent clinical concerns identified during outreach to the LPN Care Coordinator, RN Care Manager, or supervising provider. Document all post-ED outreach and episodic care coordination activity in Epic in accordance with program requirements. Qualifications Required Active Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) or Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) certification in good standing or the ability to obtain within 6 months of employment. Prior experience in a clinical, medical assistant, or care coordination role. Working knowledge of electronic health record systems (Epic preferred). Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage patients empathetically by phone and in writing. Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple concurrent audits, outreach lists, and program requirements. Preferred Experience with quality measure programs such as HEDIS, ACO, or Collaborative. Familiarity with chart audit processes and root cause analysis methodology. Experience supporting quality improvement or practice transformation initiatives. Core Competencies Attention to detail in chart review and documentation accuracy.
