Purpose: To supervise the day-to-day nursing activities of the facility in a safe, timely and accurate manner in accordance with state and federal requirements and the policies and goals of this facility. Duties and Responsibilities: Assist the Director of Nursing Services in directing the day-to-day functions of the nursing activities in accordance with current rules, regulations, and guidelines that govern the long-term care facility. Participate in developing, maintaining, and updating written policies and procedures that govern the day-to-day functions of the nursing service department. Ensure that reference material (i.e., PDR'S, regulations, professional standards of practice, etc.) maintained at the nurses' stations is current. Recommend written material that will assist the nursing service department in meeting the day-to-day needs of the resident. Notify the resident's attending physician and next-of-kin when there is a change in the resident's condition. Visit residents on a daily basis in order to observe and evaluate each resident's physical and emotional status. Ensure that direct nursing care be provided by a licensed nurse, a certified nursing assistant, and/or a nurse aide trainee qualified to perform the procedure. Review nurses' notes to ensure that they are informative and descriptive of the nursing care being provided, that they reflect the resident's response to the care, and that such care is provided in accordance with the resident's wishes.
