Nurse Manager, Ambulatory Surgery Center

Job Summary The Nurse Manager oversees daily operations, patient flow, and clinical care in the unit, ensuring a safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care environment aligned with organizational goals and values. They manage staffing based on case volume, support clinical decision-making, and serve as a resource for staff. In addition to assisting with direct patient care when needed, they also assist with administrative functions, staff recruitment, evaluations, training, and competency development. The Nurse Manager coordinates and evaluates operations, promotes staff education, and collaborates across departments to enhance patient care, safety, and satisfaction. Duties & Responsibilities Assures that timely quality customer-focused care is delivered to all patients in the department. Evaluates and directs patient flow activities on the unit. Collaborates with other hospital managers to expedite patient flow through the department and/or facility. Problem solves, removes barriers and collaborates with the nurse director/ supervisor concerning patient care needs, timely admission and discharge from the nursing unit. Oversees the delivery of care on the shift: directing and delegating patient care assignment to nursing staff based on clinical needs of the patient and matching appropriate budgeted staffing patterns to volume and acuity. Evaluates individual nursing performance relating to clinical competencies and the overall quality of care on his or her shift. Assists the nurse director concerning staff performance for the preparation of individual staff performance appraisals. Participates in hiring and related staffing decisions. Has the authority to discipline where appropriate. Investigates and assesses all customer complaints, problems and incidents, that occur. Takes appropriate corrective action to resolve complaint. Reports all incidents and actions taken to the nurse director. Helps the nurse director identify staff educational needs and works with MD, vendors and educators to ensure those needs are met promptly. Serves as a clinical resource and role model for staff. Informs the nurse director of any patient issues, unusual activities, staff concerns or unit problems. Assures all required reports are prepared and submitted to the appropriate administration. Responds to cases of cardiopulmonary arrest, fire, disaster or other emergencies in a professional and timely manner. Evaluates and reports any problems with response to emergencies from professional staff and ancillary services. Works with the administration on duty during a community disaster to ensure that the hospital can respond appropriately. Makes recommendations to the nurse director concerning capital request items needed for the unit. Assumes responsibility for own professional development, setting goals, and striving to achieve them through available resources, such as attending seminars, in-services and/or reading journals. Supports the goals of the unit and patient care services through active daily role modeling. Makes recommendations to the nurse director of any process changes that need to occur to ensure that goals are met. Participates in Hospital and professional meetings, committees and conferences as needed. Administers direct patient care when necessary and maintains clinical skills for patient population. Performs all other related duties as assigned. Requirements Bachelor's Degree Required; Field of study: Nursing. Minimum 3 to 5 Years of job-related experience is required. Rhode Island Registered Nurse licensure required. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required. Certification in administration or related specialty is preferred and required within two years of hire. Advanced knowledge of patient population needs, nursing practices, and unit-specific clinical information. Strong understanding of regulatory and compliance standards, including Department of Health policies, accreditation requirements, and the Nurse Practice Act. Expertise in quality improvement, risk management, patient safety practices, and just-culture principles. Working knowledge of infection control, documentation standards, and clinical competencies relevant to area of responsibility. Knowledge of disaster preparedness and emergency response planning.
