Purpose of Position: Assists in a variety of surgical procedures/operations under the direct supervision of the surgeon and registered nurse. Description Demonstrates a good technical knowledge of the surgical environment, principles of infection control and sterility and uses this knowledge in assisting the Registered Nurse and Surgeon to provide a safe surgical environment which supports quality patient care. Prepares the operating room by setting up surgical instruments and equipment, sterile drapes and sterile solutions. Maintains a sterile environment according to hospital policy and AORN Standards of Care. Able to perform the scrub technician functions for all services and specialties. Assembles sterile and non-sterile equipment and adjusts as necessary to ensure proper working condition. During surgery passes instruments, and other sterile supplies to surgeon and surgeon’s assistants. Holds retractors, cuts sutures, helps count sponges, needles, supplies and instruments. Prepares, cares for, and disposes of specimens taken for laboratory analysis. Assists in applying surgical dressings. Ensures availability of surgeon and case specific instrumentation and equipment following department protocol and surgeon’s preference cards. Assists in transporting patients to the Operating Room and helps position patients on the Operating Room table. Understands and uses the appropriate sterilization methods for special equipment and instruments. Understands the specific use and functioning of all supplies and equipment used in surgical procedures. May operate sterilizers. Lights, suction, and help with diagnostic equipment. Under the direction of the surgeon and Registered Nurse, accurately and safely prepares and labels medications during the “surgical procedure.” Assists in transferring patients to the recovery area. Place orders as needed depending on department workflow and SOP. f) Review and update medication list, allergies, histories, smoking status, and social determinants of health as applicable to department. g) Demonstrate proficiency in EHR, consistently and accurately documenting information in correct fields. h) Prioritize delegated tasks based on patient care needs and office activities. -Effectively communicate with patients/family members in a manner that is consistent with MVH service expectations whether verbally or written in any form. a) Inform patients of test results and/or relay recommendations based on the specific direction/instruction of the physician, provider, RN or LPN. b) Thoroughly document all patient telephone conversations in real time and accurately relay patient questions/ request to the provider. c) Participate in team-based care and patient education initiatives to support the health and wellness of patients. -Prepare and assist with office procedures as applicable to department. a) Per department SOP, assist providers with office-based procedures and prepare supplies and patient for the care they will be receiving. Label and package specimens resulting from office-based procedures and store in the appropriate manner until transported to lab. b) Clean and sterilize exam room and instruments using proper precaution per office protocol. -Provide individualized, age-specific care to patients under the specific orders of physician or provider. a) If applicable to department, properly administer and document immunizations ordered by providers. Ensure that all appropriate documents, vaccine information sheets, etc. are provided to patients/guardians. b) If applicable to department, ensure the integrity of vaccines as per regulatory guidelines and applicable policies and procedures prior to administering. Comply with all applicable inventory and reporting requirements. Understands, assumes, and demonstrates proficiency in the role of charge nurse. Demonstrates proficiency in Computerized Nursing Informatics (information systems). Assumes role of resource person regarding patient care, orientation and teaching staff. Participates in at least four-unit staff meetings per year, attends mandatory programs and obtains three hours of Patient Care Assessment Committee (PCAC) credit per year. Participates in identification of the aspects of care for the patient, indicators used to monitor the quality and appropriateness of care, and the evaluation of that care. Adheres to safety, blood/body fluid policies and procedures. Assesses personal learning development needs. Maintains documentation of current and ongoing professional development activities. Regularly up-dates knowledge of techniques and regulations appropriate to the age of the patient served. Shows a willingness to participate on Nursing Committees. Represents hospital in the community and within the hospital by maintaining confidentiality regarding patients and hospital matters and by presenting the hospital in a manner that will best market the services provided.
