Breastfeeding education and counseling are an integral part of the care provided by the lactation consultant. The Lactation Consultant enhances the knowledge and strengths of the breastfeeding woman and her support systems. Establishes priorities based on individual needs of each breastfeeding mother, infant, child and family. Develops a plan of care based on individual concerns and problems, formulates expected outcomes and arranges for follow up evaluation. Respects the unique cultural and ethnic attitudes of our patient populations with respect toward breastfeeding. Demonstrates competency in lactation consultation practice. Collaborates with other health care disciplines to coordinate patient care and discharge plans. Maintains effective communication with staff, physician, clients and families, also within the unit and with other departments. Qualifications Bachelor in Nursing preferred. Currently licensed and registered to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York. Certification as a Lactation Consultant by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners required. Certified in Neonatal Resuscitation.
