Despite its dense urban environs, Newark is surprisingly close to several pristine wilderness and open space areas where you can get away from the hustle and bustle of city life. For example, the 2,000-acre South Mountain Reservation in South Orange — which has hiking trails, a fishing pond, and even a zoo — is a short train ride from Newark.
