Immediately after the emergency, the Medication Aide shall verbally notify the licensed nurse on duty or on call and appropriately document the action and notification Apply specifically ordered ophthalmic, optic, and nasal medication Must be able to follow accurately all principals of good medication administration Must be willing to cooperate with licensed nurse in charge and be accountable for all actions Must be aware of limitations and not attempt to exceed those Must be willing to help with all work in whatever way possible which includes lifting, transferring, and supporting residents who weigh 50 lbs or more Other duties as assigned by the Administrator and/or supervisor A Medication Aide Cannot: Administer medication by the injection route including: a. intramuscular route b. intravenous route c. subcutaneous route d. intradermal route e. hypodermoclysis route Administer medication used for intermittent positive pressure breathing (IPPB) treatments or any form of medication nebulizer treatments Administer previously ordered pro re nata (PRN) medication unless authorization is obtained from the facility’s licensed nurse on duty or on call. If authorization is obtained, the Medication Aide must: a. document in the resident’s records, symptoms indicating the need for the medication and the time the symptoms occurred b. document in resident’s records that the facility’s licensed nurse was contacted, symptoms were described, and permission was granted to administer the medication and the time of contact c. obtain permission to administer the medication each time the symptoms occur in the resident, and d. ensure that the resident’s records are co-signed by the licensed nurse who gave permission by the end of the nurse’s shift or if the nurse was on call, by the end of the nurse’s next tour of duty Administer the initial dose of a medication that has not been previously administered to a resident. Whether a medication has been previously administered shall be determined by the resident’s current clinical records Calculate a resident’s medication doses for administration except that the permit holder may: a. Measure a prescribed amount of a liquid medication to be administered; and b. Break a tablet for administration to a resident provided the licensed nurse on duty or on call has calculated the dosage. The resident’s medication card or its equivalent shall accurately document how the tablet must be altered prior to administration. Crush medication unless authorization is obtained from the licensed nurse on duty or on resident’s medication card or its equivalent Administer medications or feedings by way of a tube inserted in a cavity of the body Receive or assume responsibility for reducing to writing a verbal or telephone order from a physician, dentist, or podiatrist Order a resident’s medications from a pharmacy verbally. (Must be by fax only) Apply topical medications that involve the treatment of skin that is broken or blistered of when specified aseptic technique is ordered by the attending physician Steal, divert, or otherwise misuse medications Fraudulently procure or attempt to procure a permit Neglect to administer appropriate medications, as prescribed, in a responsible manner Administer medications if the person is unable to do so with reasonable skill and safety to residents by reason of drunkenness, excessive use of drugs, narcotics, chemicals, or any other type of material; or Order a STAT medication unless approved by DON/ADON Medication aides must function in accordance with accepted pharmaceutical and nursing practices, and as set forth in this facility’s policies. Registered Nurse - Gastroenterology Lab - PRN

Location: Main Hospital Bldg - 2nd Floor **DAY SHIFT** Work Hours: 10hr shift (6:45am-4:15pm) Employment Type: PRN Primary Purpose The RN is a licensed professional who uses the Parkland nursing professional practice model to coordinate patient care delivery, that focuses on a particular patient population(s)/specific health conditions, by the health care team. Using the nursing process, the RN assesses the patient, identifies nursing diagnoses based on responses to health problems, develops and implements an individualized plan of care, and evaluates the patient's response. The RN utilizes knowledge of patient needs and the healthcare environment to assist patients to transition through the healthcare encounter without any preventable complications or delays. The RN delegates interventions to health care personnel based on the Texas Nursing Practice Act, each patient's condition and the competencies of the employee. Minimum Specifications Education Must be a graduate from an accredited school of nursing. Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred. Experience If less than 9 months experience, a Nurse residency is required. LVN experience does not waive this requirement. Develops effective internal controls that promote adherence to applicable state/federal laws and the program requirements of accreditation agencies and federal, state, and private health plans. Maintains and updates knowledge and appropriate utilization of sanitation, infection control, safety, supplies, equipment, and materials. Performs appropriate patient assessments including continuous surveillance. Participates consistently in Universal Protocol. Recognizes changes in a patient's condition and provides appropriate interventions as necessary and ordered. Consults with other team members as required, notifies providers to report changes in patient condition and implements orders in a timely manner. Exercises independent judgment in providing and prioritizing safe nursing care to patient. Must be able to manage a gastroenterology lab patient with varied medical conditions. Must provide safe medication administration using the patient's six (6) rights, provide maintenance and management of IV access. Supports appropriate pain management as appropriate for each individual patient, provides emergency resuscitation care of an adult and provides an individualized plan of care. Administers sedation and analgesia. Physiologically monitors patient during procedures and uses monitor to record physiological status and documents accordingly. Assesses and monitors patient condition including vital sign monitoring and recognition of ECG changes, and initiates appropriate nursing interventions. Completes appropriate documentation. Maintains accurate and timely entries and notations in patient care records and hospital documents. Ensures all records and documents meet the standards, goals, and objectives of the Gastroenterology Lab and Parkland. Works with other staff in providing direction to non-nursing staff. Participates in information exchanges with nursing and other Parkland staff that support the standards, missions, goals and objectives of the department and Parkland. Provides appropriate hand off any time care is relinquished. Seeks and utilizes direction from more experience staff and team members as needed. Serves as Charge Nurse on rotation as necessary. Serves as a preceptor or trainer to newer nursing and clinical staff members as well as student trainees. Prepares and conducts an in-service educational program for the Gastroenterology Lab at least once per year. Identifies ways to improve work process and patient and customer satisfaction. Makes recommendations to supervisor, implements and monitors results as appropriate in support of the overall goals of the Gastroenterology Lab and Parkland. May serve on various unit and interdisciplinary committees as opportunities presents. Proactively anticipates and responds to the needs of patients, their families, physicians, and coworkers.
