Responsibilities* The Pediatric Cardio-thoracic Intensive Care Unit (PCTU) is a 20 bed tertiary care center receiving patients from state, regional, national and international referrals. PCTU specializes in the medical and surgical care of infants, children, adolescents and adults with congenital and acquired heart disease. Our goal is the provision of exemplary nursing care embracing a philosophy of family centered care empowering families to participate in the decision making and care of their children. The Pediatric Cardio-thoracic Intensive Care Unit nurse cares for patients in a technology intensive environment including ECMO, CRRT and VAD's. They are required to perform complex physiologic patient assessments in a high intensity environment for high acuity patients with rapidly changing status. Our patients undergo the most progressive surgical and catheterization interventions. Our nursing staff practice in close partnership with the cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons and fellows providing individual support and education to families and patients throughout their intensive care unit admission. PCTU will be expanding by 9 beds in the spring of 2027 Required Qualifications* Current Michigan Registered Nurse License. 12-24 months of current PICU, NICU or Childrens or adult ED RN experience PALS certification is required (or within six (6) months of date of hire) or MUST be completed prior to end of probationary period . Job Description Utilizes the nursing process for assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation to provide safe, therapeutic care. The Pediatric Interventional Cardiology Lab at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital consists of the Cath Lab where patients undergo cardiac catheterization procedures. This is done with diagnostic imaging equipment to visualize the arteries and chambers of the heart to treat any abnormality found. The Pediatric Interventional Cardiology lab also consists of the EP Lab where cardiac electrophysiology studies are performed. An EP study is an invasive procedure that tests the electrical conduction system of the heart to assess the electrical activity and conduction pathways of the heart. This position is to support our patients pre and post procedure and to prepare them for transfer to our in-patient area/s or home. Responsibilities Responsible for maintaining the knowledge and abilities essential to the performance of stated behaviors. Basic knowledge to perform arithmetic calculations when maintaining record of charges normally acquired through completion of high school. Approximately three to six months of related experience, preferred, in order to learn sterile techniques, become familiar with anesthesia equipment and cleaning procedures, and learn inventory techniques. Interpersonal skills necessary in order to communicate effectively with the surgical team and maintain effective contacts with physicians and hospital employees. Familiarity and manual dexterity required with all basic surgical instruments, supplies, equipment and procedures. Basic analytical skills necessary to develop solutions to problems concerning technical needs of surgery. Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail when conducting procedures and operating special computer software. BLS-HCP Certification required and/or must be obtained within 90 days of hire. WORKING CONDITIONS Surgical areas work environment with frequent exposure to unpleasant odors from disinfectant solutions/chemicals.
