DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION : The Perioperative Fellowship is an educational experience presented through the Penn State School of Nursing. Designed to ease the transition from Gradate Nurse to a professional operating room nurse, the Perioperative Nursing Course is a structured educational program offering training into the challenging specialty of Operating Room nursing. The course begins with eight weeks of basic orientation to Perioperative nursing with didactic and clinical experience in the intra-operative setting. Orientation to all surgical specialties begins the ninth week and continues for approximately seven more months. A trauma nursing course will be provided as well. Working side-by-side with an Operating Room staff nurse preceptor, you will share in the challenges and rewards that occur at our medical center, while enjoying personal growth and skills advancement. Peer support, nurturing and continuous feedback will be provided throughout the experience. After successful completion of the program, you will be offered a full-time position at the Medical Center. Job Summary and Qualifications Position Details: Self/preferential scheduling posted four weeks in advance for you to have predictability in your schedule Culture of mutual respect and collaboration among all surgical staff Continuous investment in equipment including surgical instruments, devices and patient positioning for you to do your best work with patient safety and workflow efficiency in the Operating Room Rounding with unit leaders, including charge nurses, to ensure your voice is heard on suggestions for patient care and surgical workflow improvement On-call is required during select non-business hours What you will do in this role: Evaluate patients prior to surgery Provide patient and family education surrounding the procedure and peri-operative process Assume responsibility for patient preparation, including intravenous therapy, preoperative medications, and surgical site verification Participate in surgical site verification, including briefing, time out, debriefing, and universal protocols, according to hospital policy Recognize and respond to patient emergencies Deliver high-quality, patient-centered care while managing evidence-based practices and continuous improvement initiatives Be an integral member of a dynamic interdisciplinary team – consisting of the provider(s), surgeons, surgical technologists and more Consistently apply the nursing process, critical thinking skills, scientific judgment, technical skills and leadership to independently deliver safe nursing care to patients Assess patient condition, monitor throughout your shift, and document changes in patient condition along with the care provided thoroughly Educate patients and families/caregivers about the patient’s medical condition, treatment and follow-up measures What qualifications you will need: 1+ year of clinical experience as a licensed RN required - Operating Room, OR, CVOR, Perioperative Services, Surgical Center Graduate of an Accredited School of Nursing is required. BSN is preferred. Current Registered Nurse License in the State of Texas or Multi-State Compact License (Employees with RN Compact License are required to obtain Texas RN License within 90 days of hire date). Current BLS and ACLS Certification are required. CNOR is preferred. Job Overview The Operating Room Nurse provides direct patient care in a surgical setting in accordance with applicable scope and standards of practice with the policies, values, and mission of the organization. Monitors and manages the patient and operative environment during surgery to maintain a safe environment, optimize outcomes and maximize available resources. Duties & Responsibilities Consults and coordinates with health care team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate intraoperative patient care plans Navigates and documents in the EMR to support patient care. Works within scope of practice and delegates according to Nurse Practice Act. Serves as the communication liaison to patients, families and members of the operating team Prepares operating room for patient and procedure Delivers patient and family centered care incorporating the nursing process while providing developmentally appropriate, culturally sensitive, evidence-based care. Actively anticipates changes in patient outcomes/ unit needs in the provision of care. Communicate and advocate patient values, preferences and expressed needs as part of implementation of care plan, evaluation of care and assessment of patient/family learning needs to the interdisciplinary team. Minimum Qualifications Degrees Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Experience One (1) year perioperative nursing experience or successful completion of a perioperative course Equivalency Applicants with an Associate's Degree in Nursing who agree to obtain a BSN within 3 years from their start date may be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science (BSN) in Nursing Licenses & Certifications BLS/CPR, PALS, and ACLS from the American Heart Association with at least 6 months left before expiration is required upon hire.
