Summary GENERAL SUMMARY The Surgical Technician is responsible for assisting the RN and surgeon during operative procedures. The Surgical Technician assists with cases of various degrees of complexity. This role may require the ability to work flexible shifts and be on call to help fulfill 24/7 operations. Reports to the Operating Room Manager. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Arranges and inventories sterile set up utilizing knowledge of asepsis and sterilization techniques. Assists in preparing and moving of patients, cleaning and room set up. Provides a safe and efficient environment for the surgical patient under the direction of the registered nurse within a defined scope of practice. Performs other duties as assigned. LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS Certification in operating room technology or surgical technology through the National Association of Operating Room Technicians required. MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS Graduation from an accredited school of surgical technology, operating room technology or a school of practical nursing or equivalent program required. Basic knowledge to perform arithmetic calculations when maintaining record of charges normally acquired through completion of high school. Approximately three to six months of related experience, preferred, in order to learn sterile techniques, become familiar with anesthesia equipment and cleaning procedures, and learn inventory techniques. Interpersonal skills necessary in order to communicate effectively with the surgical team and maintain effective contacts with physicians and hospital employees. Familiarity and manual dexterity required with all basic surgical instruments, supplies, equipment and procedures. Basic analytical skills necessary to develop solutions to problems concerning technical needs of surgery. Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail when conducting procedures and operating special computer software. BLS-HCP Certification required and/or must be obtained within 90 days of hire. WORKING CONDITIONS Surgical areas work environment with frequent exposure to unpleasant odors from disinfectant solutions/chemicals. A caregiver who excels in this role will: Provide quality, individualized patient care in the perioperative, intraoperative and postoperative phases. Follow guidelines for perioperative practices as established by AORN. Maintain the sterile field. Review daily assignments and ascertain surgeon-specific preferences and anesthesia. Identify and prioritize individual patient care needs taking into consideration age, physiological, cultural and physical status. Plan care based on contemplated procedure, standards of practice, admission assessment and MD preferences. Assemble, check and open sterile packs, sutures and more. Practice and assist others in maintaining aseptic technique and report and/or correct any breaks. Comply with required standards for patient positioning, skin preparation, counting and side-site verification. Remain with the sterile setup to assure maintenance of the sterile field. Assist with draping the sterile field. Prepare/edit surgeon's preference lists. Communicate pertinent information during procedure and during personnel changes, including status of surgical procedure. Collect specimens as directed by the surgeon and identify the origin of each specimen to the RN Circulator. Assist surgeons and assistants with retraction and suction as directed. Assure that all biohazard material is handled and disposed of properly using universal precautions. Keep accurate counts of all sutures, sharps, soft goods and instruments. Assure that all instrumentation is returned to decontamination with proper documentation count sheets. Needs minimal sustained direction in assessing work load, directing staff and carrying out departmental and professional responsibilities; self-starting and self-motivating; working hours may exceed eight (8) hours per day and is based on what is needed to accomplish completion of the daily surgical schedule.
