Clinical duties include: preoperative evaluation of the obstetric patient, labor analgesia and neuraxial techniques, appropriate anesthesia and analgesia modalities for c-sections. Performs pre-anesthesia functions including: determining that an appropriate pre-anesthetic examination has been made by a physician; insuring that relevant tests have been completed and a thorough assessment of the patient has been performed; reviewing the patient's condition immediately prior to the induction of an anesthesia; checking the readiness, availability, cleanliness, sterility when required and working conditions of all the equipment used in the administration of anesthetic agents prior to administering anesthesia. All procedures and techniques utilized during anesthesia for surgery are subject to supervision by the Attending Anesthesiologist assigned to that area. Responsibilities Participates and accurately documents patients pre-anesthetic preparation and evaluation. Formulates a patient-specific plan for anesthesia care in collaboration with attending anesthesiologist. Implements, monitors and adjusts patients physiologic condition as appropriate for type of anesthesia and specific patients needs. Recognizes abnormal patient response to anesthesia and adjunct medications; takes appropriate action. Demonstrates ability to work in a stressful environment by prioritizing and implementing corrective action based on the situation. Provides observation, monitoring and resuscitation of patients in route to recovery room or to special care unit according to protocol. Provides concise comprehensive anesthesia report to recovery room or unit nurse according to protocol. Transfers the responsibility for care of the patient to other qualified providers post-operatively to assure continuity of care and patient safety. Supports operating room procedures. Keeps patient informed of their medical condition and the course of treatment being prescribed. Functions independently in executing the day to day operational and administrative management duties / responsibilities in the absence of the Chief CRNA. Participates in additional areas of responsibility, which are within the expertise of the individual CRNA. Assumes responsibility for professional development of self and contributes to and assists with the professional development of others. Initiates search of anesthesia and related literature, suggests changes and improvement in patient care standards. Functions as a clinical educator for the student registered nurse anesthetists. Follows and performs all related unit specific policies and procedures, as detailed on the unit specific competency check-list. Utilizes job and unit specific equipment as required.
