Essential Functions Assumes responsibility for the orientation of new employees to the unit. Creates an orientation program for each role in the unit. Develops, implements, and evaluates , sterile processing unit specific skills classes for new employees. Collaborates with unit manager to counsel/coach new employees during orientation to assist the orientee’s progress towards gaining competency in unit standards/skills. Supports the preceptor role by: Collaborating with CN, department leaders and preceptor to select appropriate assignments and learning experiences for new staff. Fostering the use of adult learning strategies and critical thinking with preceptors by providing ideas, skill stations, different teaching styles, and related activities to help the preceptor be a more effective teacher. Participating in the development, presentation, and evaluation of the preceptor program, in collaboration with other area educators and CNS’s. Assumes responsibility for the coordination of staff education processes through the development, implementation, and evaluation of education materials/systems. Collaborates with appropriate resources (i.e. leadership team, CNSs, other educators, content experts, organization development) to analyze needs and develop, implement, evaluate and maintain education programs (i.e. orientation skills checklists, self-studies, education videos, education supplies, and orientation manual) based on annual needs assessment, staff request, unit direction, new equipment/care practices, variance trends, and patient/parent and other customers’ satisfaction. Educational activities reflect identified needs of the target audience and/or organizational priorities related to clinical practice. Designs each educational activity to include documentation of a needs assessment, description of target audience, educational objectives, content outline, teaching methods (Cornerstone, self-study, presentation, real-time, simulation), evaluation strategies, and designation of appropriate resources (i.e. room arrangements, AV equipment, handouts, other teaching aids). Creates programs that incorporate adult learning strategies, ethical principles, critical thinking skills, professional growth, open communication, and collaborative relationships. Quality of information developed is professional with regards to organization of information, clarity of instructions, attention to details, and presentation style. Identifies staff’s individual talent in order to assist in their personal and professional development by: Sharing ideas, experiences, and successful behavior patterns. Establishing a relationship with the staff as a resource. Providing a supportive framework to guide career development. Role models and promotes high quality professional patient care through the use of clinical educational knowledge as seen in: Assisting staff with direct patient care Reviews case cart and preference card before each case. Prepares the operating room by supplying it with supplies and instruments to provide appropriate patient care oSets up and maintains the sterile field during the procedure using strict aseptic technique oPrepares and labels fluids and medications on sterile field oPerforms appropriate counts prior to the operation and before incision is closed. oParticipates in time out/sign out process Scrubs to assist the surgeon in the completion of surgical procedures by demonstrating a working knowledge of surgical instrumentation and equipment needed for a variety of procedures. o Anticipates the needs of the surgeon, passing instruments and providing sterile items in an efficient manner, as directed by the surgeon/proceduralist. Implements sharps safety practices including use of a safety zone. Prepares specimens for pathologic analysis Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization Assists operating room team with environmental cleaning and case turnovers. Stores and stocks supplies as needed Participates in assigned on call activities. Utilizes unit daily/weekly rounding as a tool in identifying educational clinical needs of staff/unit and teaches bedside staff to promote consistent delivery of patient care standards. Accepts assignment to be assigned to the unit for shift for direct patient care. Professionally supports the assigned unit as seen through interactions with patients, families, staff, colleagues, others. Professionally seeks opportunities to help teammates during shift as needed. Serves as preceptor for new staff within OR/SPD and other education staff as necessary. Demonstrates ability to prioritize workload and follows through with work in a timely manner. Regular attendance at work is an essential function of the job. Perform physical requirements as described in the Physical Requirements section Education Qualifications Graduate of an accredited School of Surgical Technologist Required or Applicable surgical technologist course of study Required Experience Qualifications Minimum 2 years of experience working as a Surgical Technologist and/or competency in scrubbing in 2 or more surgical specialties as a Surgical Technologist Required Skills And Abilities Knowledge and proficiency in applying the nursing process, nursing skills, and nursing research into patient care, teaching, and systems. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing to include use of computer technology in program presentations and/or data analysis. Able to be self-directed, with minimum supervision, and detail oriented. Must be able to perform a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature, without loss of efficiency or composure, and be able to perform under stressful conditions when confronted with multiple requests, demonstrating prioritization skills. About Us - Cardiac Cath The Cardiac Cath Lab (CCL) is designated by the state of Missouri as a level I STEMI center. The CCL provides specialized diagnostic and interventional services for both inpatient and outpatient adults. The CCL is committed to staying at the cutting edge of heart disease diagnosis and treatment by utilizing state-of-the-art technologies and equipment in our lab. Procedures that are included but not limited to: cardiac and peripheral diagnostics and revascularizations, electrophysiology studies, structural heart procedures, and vascular embolization. The normal hours of operation for the CCL are Monday through Friday 6:30am to 7:00pm with extended hours until 9:00pm on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. On call critical care/emergency services are provided 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Call is a requirement for this department with a required 20-minute staff response time. The call-team members consist of a Cardiologist, RN circulators, cath lab technologists, or Special Procedure Technologists. Schedule: Part Time (20hrs/week) What You’ll Do Utilizing knowledge, education, experience, and competence, the RN-Clinical Educator will function in an expanded clinical role within cardiac cath services and in collaboration with leadership to enhance the overall education experience for staff, new hires, apprentices, and outside entities that use FHS services for a clinical rotation site. In addition, will assist department leaders in assessing the ongoing educational needs of the department. Will assist in improving and maintaining a quality preceptorship and mentoring program. Will promote overall coordination, cohesiveness, and quality of cardiac cath education. Requirements Bachelors of Science in Nursing.
