It is a fast-paced environment where state-of-the-art technology, nationally recognized standards of care and critical thinking skills are utilized by the all-RN staff to provide compassionate patient and family-centered care. Staff on this unit are highly proficient in pre-operative and intra-operative support as well as immediate post-operative phases of cardiovascular procedures. This includes open heart surgery, ventricular assist device implantation, and various interventional procedures including transcatheter aortic valve replacement. Acute cardiology and heart failure patients also receive care in CVICU, along with overflow medical and surgical intensive care patients. Staff expertly manage all types of invasive lines, medications, hemodynamic needs, intra-aortic balloon pumps, continuous dialysis and ultrafiltration machines, and various ventricular assist devices. The success of their nursing staff is their number one priority and is supported through their encouraging environment of comradery and mentorship. MICU : The Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU)/7 West is a 20-bed intensive care unit. This unit provides holistic and compassionate care for patients with numerous diagnoses including pneumonia, GI bleed, respiratory failure, sepsis, heart failure, MI, post-cardiac arrest, acute renal failure, multi-system organ failure and many others. Nurses utilize a variety of equipment including intra-aortic balloon pumps and continuous dialysis machines. The MICU is a closed unit with an intensivist physician serving as the attending for each patient. The Christ Hospital is a teaching facility which allows the staff to work closely with the medical residents in the MICU and provides an opportunity for new nurses to receive specialized training in the Critical Care Nurse Residency Program. The MICU and SICU share primary responsibility for the Rapid Response Team (the STAT Team) and respond to calls throughout the hospital. The MICU RNs strive to utilize technology and evidence-based practice to provide compassionate and efficient care to achieve best possible outcomes for patients. SICU : The Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) is a 12-bed unit. This unit serves adult and, occasionally, adolescent patients. Diagnostic categories include neurology, neurosurgery, general surgery, vascular surgery, thoracic surgery, internal medicine, respiratory disease and OB/Gyn surgery. Many patients are admitted to the SICU directly from the operating room for their initial recovery period, including those undergoing kidney transplants. These patients receive care in the SICU immediately post-op and remain on the unit for the first few days following the transplant. Any patients requiring intraventricular/intracerebral monitoring are cared for in SICU. All SICU nurses become NIH Stroke Scale Certified within their first year on the unit. Job Description Facilitates the start-up of clinical projects in an acute care/inpatient/outpatient setting. Assists in project initiation, which includes educating physicians and hospital staff, implementing study protocol assignments, facilitating patient enrollment and follow-up. Assures protocol compliance, reports to the study Sponsor, and coordinates study participation with the patient’s clinical health plan. The goal is to complete each clinical trial with required enrollment, retention of subjects, and accurate data in accordance with FDA guidelines. The RN will need to have a willingness to learn innovative procedures such as the preparation and administration of stem cells, the use of investigational devices and the administration of investigational medications. Gives clear instructions to patients/family regarding treatment. Involves family/guardian in the assessment, initial treatment and continuing care of the patient. Identifies any physical limitations of the patient and deploys intervention when necessary. Recognizes and responds appropriately to patients/families with behavioral health problems. Interprets population related data and plans care appropriately. Identifies and responds appropriately to different needs resulting from, unique psychological needs or those associated with religious / cultural norms. Performs treatments, administers medication or operates equipment safely. Recognizes and responds to signs/symptoms of abuse or neglect. Clinical Judgment Clinical reasoning coupled with nursing skills acquired through experiential knowledge and evidence-based guidelines. Collects basic level data Follows protocols with all populations and does not deviate from them. Matches formal knowledge with clinical events to make decision Advocacy (Moral Advocacy) Works on another's behalf and represents the concerns of the patient/family and nursing staff. Serves as a moral agent in identifying and helping to resolve ethical and clinical concerns. Works on the behalf of the patients. Makes ethical/moral decisions based on rules. Represents patient when patient cannot represent self. Aware of patient's rights. Maintains patient confidentiality. Caring Practices Nursing activities that create a compassionate, supportive, and therapeutic environment for patients and staff which includes vigilance, engagement, and responsiveness of caregivers. Focus on the usual and customary needs of the patient at the present. Base care on standards and protocols. Promotes patient's independence by establishing patient care goals, teaching the patient/ family to understand condition medications, and self-care skills and answering questions. Maintain a safe physical environment. Acknowledges death as an outcome. Collaboration Works with others (e.g. patients, care providers) to encourage each person's contribution toward achieving optimal patient goals. Willing to be taught and mentored. Participates in discussion regarding patient care and/or practice issues. Maintains cooperative relationship with multidisciplinary care team, remains open to team member's contributions.
