JOB SUMMARY The Drexel Co-Op Level II must be enrolled in the Drexel Nursing Co-Op program and must have current CPR certification (BLS for Healthcare Provider with the American Heart Association). The Drexel Co-Op Level II position is designed to provide the nursing student with an opportunity to strengthen and reinforce his or her knowledge and skill in the practice of nursing under the direct supervision of a registered nurse preceptor and ease the transition of the realities of the work world. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS PATIENT / CUSTOMER Essential Accountabilities Assessment: Report Receives written/verbal report at the beginning of each shift from the registered nurse (RN) regarding the care that is to be delivered to the assigned group of patients, or for patient needing constant observation. Gives report when leaving unit, and at the completion of the shift regarding the care that was delivered Any abnormalities that occur during the shift are to be reported as they occur to the RN as well as to the oncoming CNA. Identifies the patient per hospital policy before carrying out functions. Assists with data collection for nursing history and physical. Participates in therapeutic communication. Includes available auxiliary information i.e., physician, lab, x-ray. Provides information to the registered nurse for coordination of care and discharge planning including both the patient and family. Observes skin changes and reports discoloration, abrasions, infestations or skin breakdown. Planning Participates with patient/family and the healthcare team in decisions related to the care plan of the patient. Assists in setting mutually agreed upon realistic individual patient goals. Assists with oxygen therapy only and does not regulate the flow of oxygen. Encourage the use of the pulmonary toilet by using the incentive spirometer, coughing, turning and deep breathing. Specialty populations include post-operative patients recovering from arm/leg fractures, cholecystectomy, appendectomy, tonsillectomy/adenoidectomy, and urology procedures. This multidisciplinary team—including nurses, attendings, social workers, case managers, respiratory therapists, and Child Life specialists—partners on care management, nursing interventions, and discharge planning. The patient to RN ratio is typically 4:1. A Clinical Nurse in the Seasonal Staffing Program performs Nursing duties, as assigned, throughout certain times of the year in which CHOP's operational needs require additional Nursing staff due to high volumes and acuity ("Concentrated Period"), and flex down to no, or limited, scheduled shifts during other times of the year ("Quiet Period"). Although the Concentrated and Quiet Periods will depend upon operational need, the anticipated Concentrated Period will be from September through May, with a Quiet Period from June through August.
