MDs, RNs, unit secretaries, and ancillary staff work collaboratively to care for a wide variety of patient populations. Interdisciplinary rounds are performed twice daily. The complexity of these patients requires a patient ratio of 1:1 or 1:2. The MICU population may at any given time consist of a diverse range of morbidities including, medical patients diagnosed with respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation, multi-system organ failure/ sepsis, renal failure, gastrointestinal bleeding, pulmonary hypertension, and liver failure. Interventions, depending upon the disease process, may require continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), hemodynamic drips, and inhaled prostacycline.
