Position Summary/ Department Summary: This Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner will work in the Emergency Department on the Boston BCH Main Campus. Key Responsibilities: Assess and manage patients at all acuity levels with medical and/or surgical complaints. Work in collaboration with board certified pediatric emergency medicine (PEM) physicians, PEM fellows, PAs and NPs, emergency medicine and pediatrics residents, and medical students. Perform detailed histories and physical examinations, order and interpret diagnostic studies, and develop and execute a wide range of care plans using sound clinical reasoning and critical thinking. Engage in consultations with subspecialty services to aid in patient care. Perform emergency medicine procedures (including but not limited to laceration repairs, incision and drainage, lumbar punctures, joint reductions, splinting, arthrocentesis, removal of nasal/ear foreign bodies, local nerve anesthesia and blocks). Develop discharge care plans with patients and families including prescribing medications and confirming primary care or specialty care follow-up. Work to promote and encourage optimal and realistic patient goals. Communicate with patients and families in a respectful manner leading to compassionate and empathetic care. Instruct and counsel patients regarding physical and mental health issues. Assist in the education of medical and physician assistant students rotating in the department. For NPs only: Providing individualized care for patients boarding behavioral health emergencies for up to 12 patients.
